Hello

My name is Neil, I'm a disability support worker & I currently work with a client whose in his 50s & lives in the CBD.
My client is extremely interested in electronics/mathematics but has very limited knowledge, he's of Italian background and apparently did some study back in Italy as a 15 year old.
He has no knowledge of modern technology such as computers, never used a smartphone.
He does however enjoy pulling apart this like CD players, radios & some other electronic equipment such as a TV.
My enquiry is would you have a service or know of any that could help my client get a good basic understanding of electronics such as rebuilding the equipment & mathematics. Basically hoping for a volunteer to come to his unit or if we could bring him to there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, if you have any information please contact me on my email reggie_...@hotmail.com or directly on number below.

Thank you

I think it would be a mistake to go diving into electronics without
knowing how to use a computer. Hour-for-hour, learning how to use a
computer will open a lot more doors for him.

There are organisations that donate refurbished computers, if he
doesn't have access to one. Most likely someone from CCHS could help
with this, too. His local library would run a course that is suitable
for the average 50 year old, and he wouldn't need to supply any
equipment.

If his disability is impacting on his access to a computer, there are
support workers out there already. A hacker-space is not a substitute
for professional/specialist help.

It sounds like you want him to do a TAFE course, but one-on-one, and
for free. I'm not sure how realistic his or your expectations are.

Get him online, and he will have the tools to answer a lot of his own
questions. A lot more people will take him seriously and be able to
make a connection with him if he is able to participate in an online
discussion.

Hopefully he will be able to make new friends and perhaps find a
mentor. Getting him on-line could change his life.

Have fun,
Darren

I kind of agree with Darren, somewhat. I'd be happy to sit in an IRC channel, or similar, and invite the guy to ask as many questions as he wants, so if we can set him up with a PC, it might go a long way towards pushing him in the right direction. I wish I could set aside a day or an afternoon to help the guy out but I pretty much do it for a full time job so have to draw the line somewhere :)

I would be happy to see a donation of one of the CCHS laptops we don't need (or seem to ever use) to helping out a person who needs it more than us. +1s?

Tim

I'm a +1 for giving a Laptop if that's what it takes.   However I suspect that's probably not the barrier.

Reggie we'd like to help, but the space really functions by getting to the space in person on a night or the occasional Saturday, and seeing what help is available on the day.   Anything beyond that is up to the goodwill of the membership base
