I saw these at Godfreys, perhaps good for a basic platform?

wow!, nice fine there.

Formation vacuuming here we come.   Multiple vacs can vacuum in parallel for speed or single file for a thorough clean...

Looks like it's a hard floor sweeper, so I don't know how it goes on carpet floors.
The website shows a rotating brush underneath, and something on one side that could be a nudge sensor. Reviews are highly critical of the battery.

Nevertheless, as a platform for getting into hacking robots, it looks like an interesting and low-cost place to start. Look at it this way: wheels, motors, battery, chassis and basic build are done for you.

I might try get one on the weekend and see if I can figure-out (or bypass) its motor controller.

Ta for the heads-up! :)

Cheers,
Damien

I just phoned the branch on Chapel Street, and they're sold out.
Their system shows Chadstone store has some in stock.
It's an end-of-line product, hence the reduced price.
They also said today's the last day of the sale.

HTH,
Damien

Had to work hard to convince the sales person that I *didn't* need to

My 2 units have found new homes. I bought them as a service to the club.

Nice Work Andy!

I bought two of these from Nunawading on the weekend. One is up for sale if anyone wants it, otherwise i'll donate it to the space to save my study the storage burden.

That was quick! :)
Very helpful, thankyou Andy.

Thinking out loud here -- anyone feel free to chip in your thoughts:
* Not a fan of 8051, but keep the main board if it has a smart battery charger integrated.
* Add an Arduino and maybe a shift register for more I/O.
* Add an ESP8266 bidirectional messages by wifi.
* Get those IR LEDs and sensors going.
* Add an array of SR04 ultrasonic sensors around the edge to sense distance and direction of obstacles.
* Add a motor controller. John Boxall has a tutorial here: https://tronixlabs.com.au/news/tutorial-l298n-dual-motor-controller-module-2a-and-arduino/. His book, "Arduino Workshop" is a good place to start. See Chapter 12 "Motors and Movement".
* Use the rotary encoder on the central/rear wheel as a distance/navigation sensor
* Blinkenlights are a must-have! :) Eg: WS2811, WS2812, or APA102.

Cheers,
Damien

re: keeping main board if it has a smart battery charger. To be honest I wouldn't keep that Ni-Cd even if I was just using the thing as a floor sweeper. Perhaps if it was Ni-MH I would

Easy to integrate with an ESP8266 as well

Found some time to have an (incomplete) look into the power supply, motor drivers and motor rotation optical sensors ...

The front control panel is fun too, and surprisingly complicated.

It gives you a multi-channel capacitive touch readout chip (the "buttons" aren't buttons), two LEDs, a buzzer and a LDR, all of which look like they're easy to talk to on the loom to the MCU board.

Having basic "encoders" on both drive wheels is really useful, even without quadrature. Because the encoders are before the gearbox they're actually very "fine" in their resolution relative to the linear motion of the robot.

Personally I just pulled out both brush motors, since they're not really doing anything and the space could maybe be reused. The FET output (one direction, not H-bridge) for the motor may be good to repurpose for some other device too. And you get a couple of other motors and a gearbox to play with. :)

Cheers,
Luke

Wow thanks for the photos and info. Sadly missed out on one of these

Wonder what we could use that extra motor for.   Lidar?

Anyone know anything about that Micro?  Is there another Soic micro we could load in its place?

cheers
