Job Description:
The Duke Population Research Institute (DuPRI) is seeking a highly motivated Computational Social Sciences Consultant to work closely with DuPRI faculty and researchers in the social and biological sciences at Duke University. The person in this position will serve as a technical domain expert in supporting and advising faculty on using information technologies for their research and grant writing. The position requires an entrepreneurial individual with a desire to tackle new challenges on a continual basis, an ability to determine how to solve faculty needs including best technology and personnel to enact solutions, an ability to provide solutions herself or himself when appropriate or to manage contractors at Duke or outside of Duke when appropriate to ensure that solutions are delivered to specifications and delivered in a timely manner. The successful candidate will be embedded in the computational staff of the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) and will be expected to have a close working relationship with SSRI IT staff and staff at the office of research computing of Duke University’s Office of Information Technology (OIT).

Essential Functions
1.  Be a central knowledge resource on computing resources and programming for faculty and researchers at DuPRI.
2.  Have a mastery of at least some software used in the social sciences including software for statistical computing (e.g. STATA, R, SAS), database programing (e.g. MySQL), and object-oriented programming (e.g. Perl, Python, PHP)
3.  Have a working knowledge of programing on mobile platforms and Application Programming Interfaces.
4.  .  Develop a close working relationships with SSRI and OIT computing staff and outside contractors in order to facilitate work on behalf of faculty.
5. Keep abreast of new developments in computation social sciences and be pro-active in introducing them to the faculty.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with the research process and will have direct experience with research either as a doctoral student, independent researcher, or a member of a research team or have equivalent experience in supporting research computing.

Responsibilities:
1.  Work closely with faculty at DuPRI to identify, develop, and implement useful computational methods and resources that support or advance their research.  20%
2.  Assist in the implementation, development, and improvement of application software and methods that can be utilized in analyzing and interpreting data in the social sciences. 20%
3.  Assist with the compiling, debugging, optimizing, profiling and porting of codes on Duke Compute and storage resources. 10%
4.  Manage projects using contractors at and outside of Duke to ensure performance and timely delivery 10%
5.  Design tutorials, hands-on workshops, and documentation for researchers and students in DuPRI. 10%
6.  Contribute sections to funding proposals that describe the interplay between a faculty member’s research and computing resources. 20%
9.  Dedicate a portion of time on research projects or activities for professional development, as approved. 10%

Education:
BA and research experience or equivalent experiences as an IT professional working in a research unit. Graduate degree preferred
