NSF Funded PhD Training in Network Science and Big Data at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

If you (or one of your students) is applying to a PhD program in the social sciences (including Sociology, Communication, or Geography) with an interest in social networks, text analysis and/or Big Data applications, please consider the NSF funded IGERT training PhD program at the University of California, Santa Barbara. We offer world class scholars in a world class university, on one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in California.

IGERT Faculty in the Social Sciences include:
Rick Church (Geography)
Andrew Flanagin (Communication)

Noah Friedkin (Sociology)

John W. Mohr (Sociology)

Ronald Rice (Communication)

Cynthia Stohl (Communication)

The training program which includes faculty and students from the social sciences as well as from computer science and biology offers an intensive and comprehensive formal training in Network Analysis as well as in the kind of programming expertise that is necessary for managing Big Data.  The program is interdisciplinary and students are trained to engage with scholars from other disciplinary backgrounds to address fundamental questions in Network Science.  IGERT Fellows receive a full two years of funding as NSF Fellows ($30,000/year) in addition to other funding from department and the university.  (Applicants must be U.S. citizens of permanent residents).

We are looking for outstanding students to work with an award-winning, multi-disciplinary faculty to receive cutting edge training in next generation research theories and techniques.

Applicants who have the potential to contribute to higher education through their understanding of the barriers facing women, domestic minorities, students with disabilities, and other members of groups underrepresented in higher education careers, as evidenced by life experiences and educational background are especially encouraged to apply.

Applications to the PhD Programs are due December 1, 2015
