Hi all,

For those interested, the Ira M. Millstein Center for Global Markets and
Corporate Ownership at Columbia Law School is looking to hire a full-time
data scientist:

The Ira M. Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership at
Columbia Law School is searching for a Data Scientist to conduct research
and contribute to a large-scale information extraction project with
Professor Robert J. Jackson, Jr. and postdoctoral fellow Joshua Mitts.

This large-scale information extraction project will focus on a range of
law and policy-related topics such as:

• Corporate governance characteristics of public companies;
• Identifying and quantifying equity ownership in U.S. public corporations;
and
• Specifying the governance characteristics of the principal equity owners
of public companies.

The Data Scientist will work closely with Prof. Jackson, Joshua Mitts and
their Millstein Center Colleagues, including Columbia Law School Professor
Jeffrey Gordon. The Data Scientist will also work collaboratively with at
least two other researchers hired by Professors Jackson and Gordon.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Develop text extraction algorithms using statistical machine learning in
R and Python from disclosure filings in the Securities and Exchange
Commission’s EDGAR repository. [70%]
2. Apply natural language processing to interpret legal rules using
computational methods. [15%]
3. Assist with data analysis, interpretation, write up, and dissemination
of findings through the preparation of reports, journal articles,
presentations, web sites, and other research outlets. [15%]

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent required. Proficiency in R and Python
required.  Candidates must have experience with feature design, model
selection, and text extraction using statistical machine learning, as well
as familiarity with natural language processing.  Excellent academic record
and work ethic required. Excellent organizational and oral and written
communication skills required. Enthusiasm for research required.

Bachelor’s degrees in statistics, computer science, or engineering are
preferred. A Master’s degree or PhD. in statistics or computer science is
strongly preferred. Previous work experience is a strong plus.
