Started seeing the following on the console of my Sun machine, and in
the logs of the others as well:
Jun 11 11:14:24 meeker snmpdx: error while receiving a pdu from
netman.csuohio.edu.43275: The message has a wrong version (1)
Jun 11 11:14:25 meeker last message repeated 1 time
Jun 11 11:14:26 meeker snmpdx: agent snmpd not responding
Jun 11 11:14:26 meeker snmpdx: agent_process() : bad community from
netman.csuohio.edu
Jun 11 11:14:26 meeker snmpdx: local pdu process error
Jun 11 11:14:26 meeker snmpdx: session_send_loopback_request() failed
Jun 11 11:14:37 meeker snmpdx: error while receiving a pdu from
netman.csuohio.edu.43275: The message has a wrong version (1)
Jun 11 11:14:51 meeker last message repeated 1 time
Now this was a rude awakening b/c I did not realize that I had
any of what Sun calls "Solstice Enterprise Agents" loaded and running
on my systems - must have been loaded by default during install/upgrade
of Solaris. Anyhow I am not using SNMP for anything on my college's network
but it looks as if the University must be trying to.
Can anyone tell me what the above means? Should I be worried?
Should I remove S76snmpdx from /etc/rc3.d? I've been trying to make
sense of the manual for Solstice Enterprise Agents, but reading it makes me
feel like there is an introductary chapter I missed.
Thanks,
Bob

I don't think it's a problem; it looks like a machine on your network
(netman.csuohio.edu) is doing SNMP probes but using the wrong version of
SNMP protocols. Renaming S76snmpdx would certainly stop this occuring,
alternatively remove the snmp packages from your machine. Removing SNMP
shouldn't cause any adverse effects to the operations.
