Ah yes, P3 vs. V3--now all I need is a G4 and OS X :) I can remember the
days when most acronyms and abbr. were 3-4 letters....
Well the claim fromthe Permedia people is that it that the Permedia3 can
compete with the Voodoo3. I can't substantiate that comparison, I'm just
relaying what the company PR is saying. Just on price terms though it
seems like the hands down winner is the Voodoo3--at least for the Mac
market.
And don't forget, the Proformance can only do RAVE now. Formac promises
OpenGL and Glide compatibility, but so far....
Lets put it this way, if nothing else we know from some recent responses
by developers to this list that RAVE is at the end of its life cycle.
Without demonstrable support for one more API (minimum) the Proformace is
severly limited. Yes, OGL is the future, and for now all 3Dfx is
committing to is Mesa in place of OGL, but in light of recent history 3Dfx
+ Mesa might may very well be a more capable product than ATI + Apple +
OGL.

If what I hear is true, Permedia 3 will kick Voodoo3's ass. Also, I
think the OpenGL situation is still up in the air.
I'm very glad Voodoo3 is coming to the Mac, but personally, I'm going
to wait a bit for the Formac Permedia 3 card (unless I get an itchy
trigger finger). I do have an open PCI slot, so I might go for a second
Voodoo2 card to tide me over.

If you value your 2D like I do, it isn't even a match...

And on what exactly are you basing this? I don't know of any released
benchmarks for the V3's 2d performance on the Mac, nor of the Permedia 3's
for that matter.
DAMNIT, don't call the Permidia 3 a P3, sounds like Pentium 3, and i
wouldn't want to confuse the two.

Well I don't have the benchmarks to back me up really it's more of a gut
feeling. I don't know about the States but over here the Formac-brand is
well established in the Mac community and _so far_ their 2D cards have
been _the_ best...and since I make a living with Graphic design the 2D
performance of a card is my primary criterium(? sorry no dictionary:)
My view is the Formac is a 2d card with 3D bonus, whereas the V3 a
3Dcard with 2D bonus. I'm certainly not saying it's a bad card, but I
have my priorities in criteria:)
Just to validate my argument a tidbit, here are some snippets I took
from some sites...my apologies for the quotes without source...
Voodoo3 only understands how to do a 565(?) RGB desktop display mode,
and doesn't understand how to do a 16 bit1555 mode the MacOS needs.
There is a workaround but you lose some lower red bit. Also it can't
really do 3D in a window.
They did a test on MacUP Online a German site. They tested 4 Graphics
cards. The ATI 128 from the G3 Blue & White (slower original ATI 128
version), the ProFormance III card from Formac and the MacPicasso 750 &
850 from Villagetronic.
The Formac was compatible with TFT monitors already. The
Formac card used a VGA adapter, so it should give the Proformance III
the possibility to use DDC-2b-Protocol compliant monitors. This means
greater refresh rates options and resolutions will be possible.
Proformance III offers 100 Hz+ resolutions at 1152x870 and 1280x960.
2D-Performance: The Scrolling in Photoshop and Xpress 4 are with the
MacPicasso and especially the Formac card considerably faster in high
resolutions.
Unfortunately I can't seem to acces Formac's site but I assure you it's
specs where most impressive!

I was *intentionally* trying to be confusing, and frankly don't give a
damn about the Pentium 3 :)
'Sides, what difference does it make what we call the damn things. A
company named Microconversions Inc. gets the abbreviation MC, when it
should be MI or MCI and their logo looks like it reads "IMC". ATI
Technologies stamps a logo that looks like "ATi" on their products, yet
there is no lowercase letter in the acronymn commonly used in print. There
is no common sense to be had in these neological technocrnynms.
I'm with Ferdinand deSaussure on this one.

Assuming you mean MB of memory when you say 8 and 16, I thought the
Proformance Permedia 3 came in 16MB and 32MB versions.

I don't remember the numbers exactly.
Would be interesting to compare them, now that we know Formac prices.

I've got a Permedia 2 in my PC. I have to say that it's a wonderful OpenGL
card, very powerful for that.
And the price of that Permerdia 2 (FireGL 1000) is always expensive. 990 FF
in France, it's the price I paid for it ONE year ago !!!!
