I was running a Macintosh program and it suddenly quit with the message
"application has unexpectedly quit" or something to that effect.
When I tried to open the file I was working on, it said , "error, file not
loaded. ID= -39."

I used ResEdit to verify the file, and ResEdit said it was ok. I tried to
open it again, and I got the same error message.

I want to know is there a listing of Macintosh error codes, and if so,
where do I find it? Any suggestions on how I retrieve the data that I
worked on all night?

Error -39 is "Logical end-of-file reached during read operation"

get Easy Errors to get instant answers to what error numbers stand for.

There could be a number of reasons why that happened. Inside Macintosh:
Files would be the best place to start looking. Could be that a
limb broke off the tree" for that file, and a fragment of it was not
pointed to from an earlier fragment on the disk?

I'd run Norton or MacTools, just to see if that gets it fixed.

If it's data fork stuff, CanOpener would get all the text without all the
goop, and save it off into a text file. What kind of file was it (type)?

Anyone else have some ideas?

Crude but effective fix for error -39:

Re-install the application.

Believe me it works!

I just replied to a similar post in another folder, but here goes :-)

Try getting the file system-errors-701.hqx . It contains a nifty
program which lists all the common Mac error codes and some uncommon
ones. You can find it in ftp.nus.sg under the directory /ftp/nus/mac/util.
I'm sure you can find it elsewhere also, but ftp.nus.sg happens to be
local to me.. so..

I found a list of mac error codes (finally) when running MacCheck that
came with my performa.

This should list the one you are looking for...

Good Luck!

really not what I meant.
