There is a newest patch for Xcom , ver 1.4 at Microprose. Has anyone tried that?
I tried to patch with my CD version of Xcom, but, after setup.exe, it told me that
"unable to find any sound driver" and nothing happen. This patch is supposed to
fix the 16-bit sound card problem, and I really like to have my sound card work.
If someone successfully install that patch, please do show me the tip.
Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Here are the instructions for installing the patch on the CD-ROM
version of the game:

XCOM: UFO DEFENSE
--------------------------------------------
Sound and Music Patch for the CD-ROM VERSION
--------------------------------------------

First, you will need to copy all of the files from your CD-ROM
to your hard drive, like this:

From your c:\mps\ufo directory, type:

XCOPY D:\*.* /S /E (where d: is the letter of your cd-rom drive)
Then,
CDSETUP C:

To install this update, unzip the file to the hard drive
directory you have installed the game into (normally c:\mps\ufo)
and type,

PKUNZIP -d XCOM14.ZIP

Then when the update has finished, type,

SETUP

Select your sound card options and then enter the game.

START A NEW GAME!!!!!!

Your old saved games should be compatible but we recommend
that a new game be started whenever any update has been added
to a computer game.

Gravis Ultrasound users should now experience new music and
sound effects, however, although not absolutely necessary,
it is recommended that you use the latest Gravis drivers
for your card. Please contact Gravis to obtain these.

Regards,
Tim
