Has anybody noticed that the single handed swords are
a lot faster than the 2-handed swords, even if a 2-handed
sword is used single-handed ?

My 2nd time through Risen, and this time I'm a lot more
aware of tactics and what works. Just like in Gothic3
with the Long Sword which could defeat any other
weapon in the game, I'm staying with the 1-handed
and also I'm keeping my sword skill level low. The
higher level is not needed at all, and if anything, it
screws up the much better attacks that Sword 2
provides.

Also, this time, I learned Alchemy to level 3 early in
the game, and my Strength is much much higher as
a result .. Ogreroots.

The Alchemist at the Bandit Camp mentioned that
I might be able to use Obsidian to make much better
weapons and armor. Anybody got a clue when and
how to do that ?

My first time through Risen, I had all the sword levels
and the best 2-handed Bastard sword which I could
use 1-handed. I figured I was as strong as possible.
Then, I was never able to defeat more than 1 Lizard
Warrior at a time, and I had to use a lot of help and
exploits. NOW, with only sword level 2, I can take
on 3 Skeleton Warriors, or 2 Lizard Warriors, and
I defeat them with little damage to self ??????

Not happy with your attempts to 'spoil' Gothic3 for others, you now
turn your attention to Risen. Will you ever learn to shut up? You have
a perpetual overdose of narcissism.

Hmm :-) I believe narcissism is characterized by
an arrogant individual who sees everyone around
him as a threat to his grandiosity. The narcissist
constantly attacks those who are clearly his
superior in a vain attempt to place himself above
his "enemy". In addition, the narcissist tries to
surround himself with those who constantly feed
the narcissist with the ego-drug he desparately
needs ... or else. They are facilitators trying to
prevent his personal attacks against them, so they
learn to precede every comment with praise and
self-deprecation less he wage a vicious attack
on their character.

In my case ... hmmm ... :-) ... fuck you !

I tested it today. I have a 2-handed bastard sword
with hit points nearly double what my 1-handed
sword has. Of course, I'm only at sword level 2,
so I don't have a shield, but still it is a fair test
I think. I started a save with the 2-handed sword
and was attacked by 3 Lizard Warriors in fairly
tight quarters. The Lizard Warriors could only
come at me 1 at a time. With the 2-handed
sword I lasted maybe 10 seconds and the
first Lizard Warrior got me easily. He was
much quicker. Then, I started the save again,
but with the 1-handed sword and my shield.
I simply let the first LW attack me until I saw
him lose concentration. I got him in 5 strokes,
and immediately backed away to defend against
the 2nd LW. Same deal, but he managed to
do some damage. Then I was more careful
with the 3rd LW, but we were about even.
In the end, I got in a good hit, and then I
pressed him hard and killed the last Lizard
Warrior. I could see in all 3 fights that my
1-handed sword was quicker, and could get
a counter block advantage, and then I would
do a lot of damage.

I hope you can't just win every battle with a 1 handed sword by
spamming the attack button. I went through the game using bastard and
2 handed swords one handed, and I found the combat to be tactical and
involving just like Gothic 2, in spite of what people in this
newsgroup were saying.

You're right, but try 3 Lizard Warriors with a 2-handed
anything. In my first time through, I had a 2-handed
sword with hit 90, and I almost never beat a single
Lizard Warrior even with sword skill maxed. Now, I
have a 1-handed sword with hit 35, and I can take
on 3 Lizard Warriors and win ????? Because I'm
a lot faster than they are, and as soon as I get
a counter parry ( sword level 2 ), I get in 3 or 4
heavy blows in a row with all of them doing damage.

Also, I just did another test that is a total convincer
for me. I went after 2 Ogres near the Bandit Camp.
I figured what the heck ... and to my extreme
surprise, I beat both of them and took very little
damage. The quickness of the 1-handed attack
stun locks the Ogres !!!!! Hoo Ha !

It was the same in Gothic 3 regards the top
weapon .. the Long Sword. Not the first time
PB has pulled this on us.

So now I want to try the 1-handed Obsidian
sword. If it is also fast, then that will be the
top weapon in the game, even if the hit points
are low.

Your grasp of the obvious is astounding. Two points.

In (just about) every game that has one handed and two handed swords one
handed swords have a far greater attack speed.

In real life a one handed sword is lighter and easier to wield and as such
has a far greater attack speed.

You should stick to things more suited to your mental capacity, such as the
time that you pretended that your worked with CERN and babbled about your
confusion with international keyboard layouts.

I'm not reading the rest of your post because a quick look at the follow up
suggests that it contains spoilers.

Hah! Now I'm in Ch 3 in the volcano with the Inquisitor.
And, I have the 1-handed Obsidian sword at hit 50.
I'm taking on 2 LW at a time, and winning with little
damage. The Obsidian sword is just as fast as the
Fine sword at hit 35 ... and both are waaay better
than the Titansoul 2-hander at hit 63. And I'm still
at level sword 2.

Personally I'm amazed that he played all the way through to near the end with
his Sword skill so low. Get it up to at least 6 or 7 and things get way
easier. Some of the additional moves you get are worth the investment, no
matter which weapon you wield.
