I'm trying to run Amber: Journeys Beyond on Windows XP. However, whenever I
try, I get the message "script error: handler not defined" and then below it
"#MOVUTILS."

I suspect it has something to do with Quicktime incompatibilities. I did,
of course install the old version of Quicktime that came with the game. So
now I have that version and the new version that was already on my computer.

Okay. So basically it seems that I can proceed by simply choosing
"continue" after receiving that message. However, all I can do now is see
the opening logo animation and then I get another "script error: handler not
defined" message. But now, under it it says "#newGame."

Be sure 'Movutils.dll' is in your '.../Amber_jb' folder. If you are
trying to run it from a shortcut, be sure the default/start directory
is where the game is installed.

Does 'Movutils.dll' show in your '.../Amber_jb/Install.log'?

I'd un-install the game and re-install it.

I'm sure that you'd probably need to run it in "compatibility mode" for win
95 or 98.....if you haven't already tried that.

Thanks guys, but as I've said the problem isn't with the "movutils" message
anymore. I've found that I can just click "continue" when that message pops
up, and the game will proceed. Well, I at least get to see the opening Hue
Forest logo animation. But then I get another error. It says "script
error: handler not defined..........#newGame." I can either "quit," or
"continue." When I click continue I just get a black screen with the white
cursor pointer I can move around. I have to do the Control+Alt+Delete thing
to get out of it.

I've tried not using the shortcut. I'm now clicking directly on the
program, but it still happens. I've also tried all the compatability modes.
I've also uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times.

have you looked to see if there's a patch available, or contacted the
developer/publisher directly?

I had the same problem (with the demo). I'm afraid there is no
help. According to

http://www.ntcompatible.com/comp.php?cat=games&idx=a&sort=&st=150

Amber doesn't run under NT and Win2k.

The first error (movutils) might be causing the second error. Fix the first error and the second error may go away. So, is 'movutils.dll' in the Amber folder/directory? ('movutils' = MovieUtilities External Factory. If you don't get 'movutils.dll' to load, you won't see any MOVies! Duh! :-} ) I couldn't get any reaction from a search for 'newGame'. 'Game' is defined and I assume it's trying to do 'new Game' (a C++ thing, or similar.). I assume you have read the troubleshooting section of the 'readme.wri' file, and have set your screen to 16bit depth before starting the game, with CD in the drive. And installed the Quicktime that *came with the game*(you can have more than one QT version installed, not like DX, which only allows a single installation). Correct? Actually I don't have WinNT. I'm using XP. I've tried setting the compatability to Win95 and changing the screen resolution to 16bit. There is a file called "movutil.dll" in the Amber folder, and I did install the Quicktime version (32, I think) that came with the game. As I said, I -was- able to see the opening Hue Forest Entertainment logo animation, so maybe that means the Quicktime is working properly. I don't know. I don't know if this means anything, but it's worth a mention: I've installed/uninstalled/reinstalled it a number of times now. It seems that sometimes during the installation process, when it's installing Quicktime 32, the installation program seems to poop out and close before it's completed. Then when I go to reinstall the game, it says something like "a previous version of Quicktime was found that was not fully installed. Would you like to complete the installation?" Of course, I choose yes. Afterwards, it does seem like it's installed, as there is a QT32 icon in the Control Panel, and there are Quicktime32 folders on the c: drive and on the desktop's programs menu. I don't know if any of that is relevant. Amber ran in 256 colors and 640x480 resolution. It's been a
while since I played, and I don't remember if I had to reset my
desktop before running the game or whether it reset automatically.

I found the following in Amazon's comment section for Amber: Journeys Beyond.
Hope it helps.
-----
I've wanted to play Amber:Journey's Beyond for years, and finally bought a copy
here at Amazon. I also had a hard time running this on XP. I used the patch but
many important parts of the game ( the PDA! ) did not function. Then I read a
post saying it would run in Linux, no problems. I got out my Ubuntu Linux
laptop, installed WINE ( Windows emulator ), clicked on the setup file, viola!
Must have taken 5 minutes. Works a treat, fast, no graphics glitches. Remember
you must install Quicktime when the game setup asks you to. Also, save to the
virtual "C" drive.

What if you don't have Linux, or do not wish to install it? You could try
this...download Puppy Linux and burn the iso file to a cd/dvd. Boot your PC with
the cd in ( make sure you can boot of cd...it is usually default ). Puppy Linux
runs in RAM, it does not install to your hard drive, none of your files will be
affected. Once in, download Wine, and there you go. When you quit Puppy it will
ask if you want to save any of the files to your hard drive. Do so, so you do
not lose your gamesaves. I have not tried this method yet, but do not see why it
would not work.

Amber: Journeys Beyond itself is very cool! Creepy, just how I like it.
