I recently bought a 1571 disk drive. Everything works fine except when
writing to the second side of a double-sided disk. When I try to download
like this it writes one block and then the head moves and then writes another
block and then moves again and so on. This only happens on the second side.
Is this a known bug of the 1571? Is there anyway to fix this if it is, such
as a ROM or hardware upgrade? I did confirm that I had version 3 of the drive
ROMS. If anybody can help me out, it would be great.

Thanks...........Jim Waleke

This sure sounds like what the old ROMs (pre-3.0) would do... but you say
you have version 3 of the drive ROMs. What method did you use to insure
that you had version 3?

My 1571 used to do this saving Pocket Writer 2 files to the back of a disk,
but the problem went away when I upgraded my ROMs to 3.0.

Hmmm.

This is a known problem of the old 1571 ROMs that has been fixed in the
latest ROM versions. You can order the latest ROM (version 5) from
Commodore, though you might consider buying JiffyDOS for your system,
which upgrades the ROMs as well.

When I go to the directory menu in Desterm 2.00 it says 73, cbm dos v3.0
1571,00,00. The latest upgrade ROMS are version 5 for the stand alone unit.
I think 3.0 is the original, but I am not sure. The problem is extremely
annoying, it does this when download, saving, dissovling, you name it. I need
so help to find how to correct it.

Thanks for the info. Could someone supply me with the price of the ROMS and
the number to Commodore. Also if I bought the JiffyDOS for the drive, would I
need the computer part of it and if not can I buy the computer part separate
later.

Thanks Much Again...

You have old ROMs. The new ones say cbm dos v3.1 .

Hmmm... I had a very old 1571 (bought it used), and it used to claim to have
cbm dos v2.7 (I think it was 2.7, might have been 2.5). At any rate, when
I got it upgraded I went to 3.0, and since then I haven't had problems with it
thrashing on the back side of the disk. I don't know about downloading,
because I do that t my 1750 RAMdisk, and then copy files over.

Are the newest ROM's 5.0 or 3.1? Is 5.0 a number assigned by JiffyDOS, and
3.1 the latest CBM version? Or what?

I just read a letter in a Compute's Gazette that I found saying that there
were five versions of ROM made. Version 1,2,3,4, and 5. 1,2, and 4 were beta
versions and were not released and version 3 was the old ROM and version 5 was
the new ROM from Commodore. Now on this JiffyDos I heard it is an upgrade
ROM, but don't know if you can use it for an upgrade without the computer part
of the ROMs. Does someone know and could post information on the version 3.1
ROMS from Commodore. Quite of few people say they have them.

Yep, all that has been said about this is true....in fact, I sent away for my
rom updates from commodore, since I did not have the $80 for jiffydos.
Anyways, seeing that there is always the prospect of blowing a rom in the
future (for what ever reason), I decided to make backup the roms using my
trusty eprom programmer.......so I can say, yes, rom upgrades will fix all that
is wrong with the 1571's.

I have only had experience with two 1571s. I purchased the first one in
about 1986. The power up message was cbm dos v3.0 1571. This drive had
the slow writing to the back side problem and it would also take forever
to finally "catch" onto a disk formatted single sided on a 1541. It
seemed to spend a long time trying to find data on the unformated side.
I currently own a C128-D with a built in 1571. The power up message is
cbm dos v3.1 1571. It doesn't have either of the problems I mentioned.
My guess is that this is THE upgraded ROM because it is the most recently
released hardware. Maybe you should call up CMD directly and ask them
about JiffyDOS.

The "catch" problem also is part of my problem that I didn't mention, not as
serious as the slowing writing. I have recieved information that the drive
ROM will work without the computer ROM from CMD, just no speed up. I am still
confused on the upgrade rom version number though. Thanks for the info...

I know this is a little off the subject, but I see you closed your last
posting with a "C-UseNet 0.46". Could you explain that too me?

C-UseNet is a netnews reader that I wrote for C-Net Amiga BBS. It's an
identifier of sorts, so people KNOW this guy is posting off of an BBS.
Guess I should make disclaimer: lines instead eh?
