I'm looking for something that can display some basic HTML documents on an
Apple IIGS. Is there a version of Lynx or some other web browser besides
Spectrim Internet Suite? I don't want to have to shell out $70 just to be
able to display some HTML document on my IIGS's screen (usually
instructions of some kind) while I work on my other computer.

I could also use some kind of PDF viewer or something that can read modern
Word documents (.DOC) as well, but I fear that would be asking too much.

Download locations would help.

Spectrum's price was slashed in half, oh, about 2 or 3 years ago. The cost
of Spectrum is $35, and the built-in text editor has the ability to load
in html documents and to render those html documents. IOW, you don't need
the IIGS web browser Spectrum Internet Suite to display/render html;
Spectrum without the $15 add-on web browser will do it just fine.

To word that another way...if you want to view html while on the net,
you will need Spectrum + Spectrum Internet Suite. On the other hand, if
the html file resides on your IIGS's hard drive, RAM card, or disk,
Spectrum's text editor is all that's needed to display/render the html
code.

Lynx is a Unix/Linux program, but can easily be used by an Apple II
that's connected to the net, with any software that emulates VT-100, via a
dial-up Shell Account.

Pricing/ordering information about Spectrum can be found at

Whoops; it's been so long since anyone ordered Spectrum Internet Suite, or
even expressed any interest in it, I forgot the cost. In any case, the
website at http://users.foxvalley.net/~joko has all the complete and
accurate info.

Sheppyware appears to have what you're looking for. Check out Web Works GS
at:

It's shareware and only $15 to register.

I think the question is more - Is it possible to port Lynx (or Bobcat) to GNO?

You could try Arachnid
ftp://ftp.syndicomm.com/pub/a2central/pub/gsos/telecom/arachnidr3.shk
It's free, but it's not finished by any means. Hope to get back to it
working on it sometime.

M$ likes to regularly change their file formats on Word making older
versions obsolete. Makes it very difficult to code a viewer or
translator. There's a few technical problems with pdf too. There are
websites that can turn pdf into html, so you could go that way, then
read via Arachnid or SIS. Any graphics are going to be a problem at
this time though.
