I got an Amiga M1438S monitor for Christmas, and I'm having a serious
problem with it.
In certain screenmodes (the higher resolutions), there's a "jitter"
starts to appear after about 20-30 minutes of use. Vertical bands or
stripes flash on and off randomly, like a ghost picture, across the whole
screen. It seems to stop when a menu is pulled down and left there (with
MagicMenu). The problem *doesn't* occur in the standard PAL modes, and is
at its worst in Super72 Hires. It also affects the mouse pointer.
Soemtimes it doesn't affect the frontmost screen as much, but when I pull
this down to show Workbench, it's much worse on that screen while not so
bad on the one that's been pulled down.
I'm using an A1200 with Blizzard-III 50Mhz 030 and Squirrel with CD-ROM
and SyQuest 135 attached. Could it be a power related problem? Or
something to do with the Amiga video chip (which has never used those
screenmodes before, so perhaps has always been this way)? Is it something
heat related, since it doesn't happen in the first 20 minutes or so after
switching on? Could it be a problem when the Blizzard heats up? Is it
the monitor or the Amiga?
I need to know quickly whether the monitor has to be sent back or not...

Try to replace the pure white colour (RGB 255/255/255) with a light grey
like RGB:240/240/240. A lot of 1200 have this problem...

It's only your A1200 fault. The chip which is on left hand side, at the
bottom of the mother board, heat a lot. Put your finger on it, and your
magic stripes will disappear :)
IMHO, there is nothing to do because of the keyboard.

I've the same problem with my old A1200, but now my monitor works fine
with an A4000.

If you got this problems with standard amiga screenmode,i.e. not Graphic card
I think that your monitor is in trouble.

I myself get lighter parts on the screen (bars) when opening a screen.
I use a PicassoII in 38Khz on this monitor with Cybergfx installed, and
when i use a light grey background and open a dark or white box on that
screen, on both sides of the box blueish stripes apear, this is not
occuring on the 1960 monitor. So i think it's deffenitly the monitor
screwing up....

I am sorry that I did write you not quicker.
This is a problem in the chips of your Amiga. I did have the same with my
second A1200. The first was working perfectly (a C=1200) after that A1200
was dying I bought a AT A1200 and I had those stripes you discribed.
I did show it to my dealer and he gave me na new AT A1200 and directly
the screen was okay.
I had the same problem in al PAL modes (PAL and interlace PAL) the screen
was okay and al other special modes it was wrong (DBPAL DBNTSC Super72
Multiscan ect.) I had at that time also a blizzard 1230 III 8 MB and
also it was starting after a while the machine was switch on.
An the same things with pulling a screen down.
I am sure that this is a defective Amiga. (Alice)

That's OK :) I did some testing with a friend's gear and established that
the problem is with my A1200 rather than the M1438S.

Yep, someone has confirmed this in another newsgroup.
> I am sure that this is a defective Amiga. (Alice)
The other reply suggested that Lisa's the problem. Either way, it
definitely appears that a faulty chip is causing the problem. I've come
across someone else who is experiencing the same thing.
As a workaround, I'm running a commodity called ColorPatch and I've set
this to drop the contast by 1%. This is enough to make the problem go
away.
Thanks for your help.
