The subject program, downloaded earlier today from
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html,
doesn't seem to work at all on my Windows NT 4.0 workstation (Build
1381; SP6). Attempting to run it immediately results in a "16 bit
MS-DOS Subsystem" error msg box stating that "The NTVDM CPU has
encountered an illegal instruction. CS:043d IP:fff5 OP:ff f8 ff fa
ff".

I noticed that the PuTTY webpages say that release 0.53b is the
latest, and that the md5sums files I downloaded for the latest release
do include an entry for "putty-0.53b-installer.exe", but I could only
find the seeminly earlier version "putty-0.53-installer.exe" to
download. (I have also downloaded the individual executables and they
seem to run just fine.)

Has someone experienced this or a similar problem with the PuTTY
installer program, which was fairly recently provided by Simon Tatham
for Intel x86 machines? Is there a more recent, and possibly fixed,
version "putty-0.53b-installer.exe" available for download from
somewhere?

Thanks in advance ...

The only installer I see is for putty-0.53b. The FTP link from the PuTTY
page is to:
ftp://ftp.chiark.greenend.org.uk/users/sgtatham/putty-latest/x86/putty-0.53b
-installer.exe

Perhaps you have a cache that has an old version of the page?
I can verify that it does work on WinNT4SP6a, because I have used it myself.

It is more than likely that the copy you downloaded has not downloaded
properly.
Did you use HTTP or FTP to download it from ?

I would suggest that you try the other method, then try installing again.

Well, it turns out you were both right: my previous download attempt
had indeed resulted in a garbage file (which of course failed to
execute), and when I cleared my browser's disk cache, the freshly
fetched PuTTY Download page properly presented links for the
putty-0.53b-installer.exe program. I was able to download it
correctly and it works just fine on both WinNT and WinME PCs.
Thanks for posting the helpful suggestions!
