OK,

What I'd like to do is use printcap to share a printer amung some unix
machines... Problem is that the printer is on a windows machine.

Now, I think it should be possable to have a dummy printer and feed the
data out to smbclient (with scripts) using a print filter...

Any Ideas on HOW?

Ah, lanman doesn't insist on saving passwords ??? where did you see that ?
After tests, i think the best way is msclient with a guest logon,
so you don't save any usefull passwd, and then you can do any user
connection by:
net use x: \\host\service%user
which can't be done with lanman ! :-( so with lanman you can't do
any connect to a different account than the logon one, which i think
is very bad.

Hello once again !

Has anybody seen one of these before - and more importantly does anybody know
what to do to address the problem ?

-- C:\WINDOWS>net use x: \\nipper\po
-- Error 54: The network is currently busy processing other requests or is out
-- of resources. Try again later, or verify your network configuration to be
-- sure that enough network resources are specified.

(can happen with varying number of concurrent connections from 9 upwards)

What is particularly strange is that I can still connect using smbclient !

Right here. If it saves for you then you've done something wrong.

For me it's a plus, since the only share with a password that the
users can connect to is their home dirs. All the others don't need
passwords. If you want to have shares allowed to certains users only
you can do it in smb.conf. You can still connect to other people's
home dirs using your username, and you'll have the access the other
user gives to the world. The only thing you lose is group level
security.

Hello all.

My PCs set their clocks from the Samba server (using "net time") at
login. This has always worked fine until yesterday, when GMT ended and
the clocks went forward an hour to BST.

The Samba server is an IBM RS/6000 running AIX 3.2.5, Samba version
1.9.15p8. I have TZ set to GMT0BST,M3.5.0,M10.4.0 - which seemed to work
OK; the RS/6000 was showing the correct time, but the "net time" command
from Windows 95 set the clock back to GMT.

Any ideas why this happened?

Jon.

Hi,

This probably isn't directly relevant to SAMBA, but you lot seem more helpful
than Microsoft any day...

My problem is this: My PDC doesn't seem to have a domain set.
'smbclient -I granite' gives:

Server time is Mon Apr 1 10:32:38 1996
Timezone is UTC+1.0

Server=[GRANITE] User=[] Workgroup=[ROCK] Domain=[]

Sharename Type Comment
--------- ---- -------
(Stuff deleted)

When I try to change the domain (in the control panel), it only changes the
Workgroup.

The PDC is running i386 NT3.50 server, Service Pack 3

This is causing havoc with my NT4.0b machine. (Or is this yet another screw
up by MS?)

Anyone know how to fix it, or do I have to wait until samba can act properly
as a PDC.

Here's what I do:

----- /etc/printcap -----

lp|PostScript|ps:\
:mx#0:\
:lp=/dev/null:\
:cm=Ghostscript to laser on OtherSys:\
:sd=/var/spool/lp/othersys:\
:af=/var/spool/lp/othersys/acct:\
:lf=/dev/console:\
:sh:\
:if=/usr/local/samba/bin/smbprint-ps:

----- /usr/local/samba/bin/smbprint-ps -----
exec /usr/local/bin/real_lp_filter unused-parm ljet2p NOT_POSTSCRIPT | /usr/local/samba/bin/smbprint $*

In my case the /usr/local/bin/real_lp_filter program comes from the
Yggdrasil distribution. It's a small C program that checks to see if the
input is Postscript and if so, invokes:
/usr/bin/gs -sDEVICE=ljet2p -sOutputFile=- -q -
If the input is not postscript, it assumes it to be ASCII text and changes
LF to CRLF for output.

If you only need to handle Postscript or if you handle ASCII elsewhere
you should just be able to have something like the following in your
smbprint-ps:
exec /usr/bin/gs -sDEVICE=ljet2p -sOutputFile=- -q - | /usr/local/samba/bin/smbprint $*

I know that it's posible to use samba in a Linux server and that it
works like a Novell server, I would like to know how can i configure my
server to do this. And will use Windows for Workgroups like a client.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,
It's less than 14 days since I installed Samba on a corporate Aix 3.2.5 box
running Samba 1.9.15pl8. I got it up and running in no time. The LAN
consists of Win95 clients. I have a shared resource (user server1 on AIX)
with the following settings:

[server1]
comment = Server1 Admin bruker
path = /home/server1
browsable = yes
writable = yes
public = yes
create mode = 0777
only guest = no
preserve case = yes
mangled names = yes
case sensitive = no
short preserve case = yes

This user is used for administrative files. The above settings gave me the
possibility to use norwegian letters in filenames, as well as preserving 8.3
files and filenames. The problem is that after editing smb.conf a few times
copying files to the Aix takes a long time. I noticed using 'ps -aef' that a
lot of smbd's was running. Is this correct? Anyway, eg. copying a 3 MB file
from a Win95 client to the Aix takes 1.5 minutes. This seems like very poor
performance to me. My complete smb.conf files is included below.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Dear List,

Sorry to whine about nettiquette, but this happened again : someone who
shall remain unnamed (but will receive a copy of this mail, anyway) has
tricked himself or his mail handler to send back to the list the digests #
576 and 577. Without even a quote mark, damn !

This is *not* the first time it happens (while it *is the first I saw
without anything replied to in the original digest). And for some of us
(relying on a modem for mail), it is an excruciating pain in the *ss.

I already saw an entire digest sent back quoted with just a 1- or 2-line
followup, which is a sad sight, also.

Could you please be a bit more careful ? A little attention would be highly
beneficial to all of us living in Usenet far recesses, hiden under
not-so-fast modems ...

Thanks in advance,
