The HP 50g is the best calculator currently being made. It's also more open
than TI models, cheaper, faster, has more storage and more features (SD
card,IR, serial, and USB ports), more languages, etc.
HP has not discouraged people from getting at the internals, unlike TI it
doesn't have to be hacked to get the most out of it. And it comes with a
really good set of doc.
There are also some sleeper models in the business category that are
extremely fast and run natively on ARM. HP issued devkits and people have
flashed completely new OS on the devices. There is a lot of good stuff
going on in the HP calculator world.
As you said there is also a lot of junk with the HP name on it,
unfortunately. But there are still a few good models left.

The Prime is new but it's not very HP'ish. It's extremely fast and has some
nice features but it is still going through significant growing pains and
is not like a traditional HP calculator so the old HP user is usually not
attracted to it.
