The DECNET 4 manual has step by step instructions on how to setup various
types of links, including DDCMP lines over serial ports. Check out the
http://www.openvms.compaq.com web site for the vms documentation and look for
the decnet-4 manual.
I seem to remember that with DECnet IV DDCMP is only supported on VAX.

and you need a routing DECNET licence if you want to run DECNET over
ethernet as well.
Standard disclaimer applies. My views in no way represent those of
my employers or service provider.
From my scribbled notes from a DECnet/OSI (ie Phase V) course,
13-Feb-1996:
<<<Asynchronous DECnet
- VAX only! (DDCMP ONLY)
- Only in 'advanced' mode of NET$CONFIGURE
- Before running NET$CONFIGURE, know which terminal & speed to use>>>
Therefore, I think Oswald's right although we seem to remember
different versions of DECnet being VAX-only.
BTW, that course was the last one run in the UK by Digital Learning
Services. The instructor was running the same course the next week,
but would be employed by Global Knowledge.
Is serial DECnet your only option? If you're just transferring files,
can't you use Kermit or something?
HTH. Regards.
Chris Bardell.
What about if the alpha is running the good old decnet-4 ? Would DDCMP be
available ?
Apparently not. See http://www.openvms.compaq.com:8000/73final/documentation/pdf/DECNET_OVMS_GD_Network.PDF
and scroll down to page 48 / 49 - the section on serial DECnet is
marked "VAX". Page 63 also explains further.
But a good point, nonetheless. Anyway, is the suggestion of Kermit of
any use for the originator of this topic?
Forgotten how much I miss NCP commands. You know - sensible syntax,
and proper (ie. complete) help...

Or use slip.

Oswald
Unless something has changed, there
is no DDCMP on Alpha.
PPP might be an option these days.
