I've read that Conner now markets a 350 meg tape drive which is the same as a
250 meg drive but uses longer tapes as well as software that recognizes the
extra length.

I am already using Conner 'lite' backup software with my Iomega 250 Insider
tape drive (I got tired of PC Backup), so my question is, can I use Conner's
350 meg software and their longer tapes in my Iomega 250? I saw the tapes at
a local store and they did say that they were QIC-80 tapes.

Thanks for any info.

Anyone tried using it with Trakker drives? I've heard that 3M had
something out but I've been unable to find it. How well does it work?

i've seen 3 ways to go to 350 MB on QIC-80 tapes, in either CompUSA or
Computer City. they all involve longer tapes, often called 2120XL, at
least by 3M. the 350 MB tapes are "slightly" more expensive per MB
($0.057) than the 250 MB tapes ($0.052).

1 - 350 MB drives, from Colorado and Conner.

2 - Colorado has an "upgrade" kit to change one of their 250 MB drives
to understand 350 MB. my guess is this includes a newer version of
their software and a firmware revision so that you can also format
this tape.

3 - 3M sells a kit that includes 2 350 MB tapes, and backup software
that comprehends both 250 and 350 MB tape lengths. (the software is
almost free.) the drawback to this approach is that you will not be
able to format the longer tapes, ever, and must always use
pre-formatted tapes.

i was lucky enough to see the 350 MB drives a day after i bought a 250
MB, and i returned the 250 unopened. i am happy so far with my
Colorado Jumbo 350.

good luck,

you need to upgrade the software to handle the longer tapes.
3m makes an upgrade package that comes with two 2120xl tapes which give
you the capability of storing 340mb compressed; the 3rd party software
comes from Arcada and includes a dos and a windows back-up package that
will let your 350 become a 350 tape drive

you need the software upgrade to do this.

the 350 mbyte drive is the 250 with different s/w and a change on the
face plate.
you just need the 2120xl tapes and the software upgrade to handle them.
there is no firmware upgrade involved.

i've tried both the 3m upgrade and colorado's upgrade.
they both work great. I'm just partial to the colorado interface.

3m's upgrade package works great;retails for about $50 with two xl tapes
and the software to run the longer tapes.

Colorado also has an upgrade to do the same thing. their package is about
$40 with one tape.

Yeah, I found this stuff at CompUSA: 3M 2120XL tapes, Colorado Upgrade
kit, and the 3M Upgrade kit.

I have a 250Mb Trakker, so I was interested in an upgrade kit (250Mb to
350Mb).

I ended up buying the Colorado upgrade kit, which includes software for
the JUMBO and the TRAKKER, as well as one 3M DC2120XL tape (XIMAT
formatted). I just bought this the other day, so I've only used it to
backup on the preformatted tape. I am uncertain as to whether the
software will be able to format DC2120XL tapes because of something I
read on the 3M Upgrade box (noted below), and I didn't want to take the
time to format an already formatted tape.

The Colorado Upgrade kit also reads 120 (QIC-40), 250 (QIC-80) tapes,
as well as the new 350 tapes. Info on the 3M box seemed indicate that
one would be able to format a 350 tape on a Colorado 250 Jumbo/Trakker
if one were to install a firmware kit (hardware). The Colorado Upgrade
kit, on the other hand, stated, "no hareware required", yet it didn't
say anything about formatting tapes to 350.

The 3M Upgrade box included a compatibility table, which indicated that
it supported the Connor drives in addition to several others (which I
don't remember).

If the Colorado kit doesn't allow one to format 350 tapes, the 3M kit
would definately be a better deal (if you have a Colorado drive).

Sometimes I wish I would have bought a Jumbo instead of a Trakker, as
backing up to the Trakker with a unidirection parallel port is so SLOW!
I wonder how much faster it would be if I were to obtain a bidirectional
parallel port? Hum...

The rep we spoke to yesterday at Colorado says that there is
no firmware required. We asked several times if software only
would allow formatting the 350 Mb tapes and he says yes. He also
said that the 3M kit has problems formatting soetimes, but
could not or would not say what those were.

The software was $19.?? without a tape, but $8.00 shipping.

I'll try it when it arrives though.

Note the fine print: while the upgrade is software "only", you
would need a firmware change to allow FORMATTING of a 350-tape.
(That's why the upgrade kits have pre-FORMATTED tapes only).

The standard Colorado-350 can FORMAT tapes, as well as read and
write to them.

I've heard that the Microsoft Backup program in Win95 (written by
Colorado) can also read/write the 2120xl tapes. As mentioned earlier,
you won't be able to format these tapes to 350Mb unless your drive's
firmware already has the capability.

Package (3M) claims that it supports the Iomega 250. Since they also
provide patches to Iomega's software, I assume that would include the
board as well.

If you are running any version of Ontrack you should probably check
with Arcada before installing - more so for the DOS version than for
the Windows version. There also is a bug for installing Trakker
support which requires a patch disk. They (Arcada) were quite nice
about sending it out.

IOs this the same Arcada software that comes with Conners new 420mg

tape backup drive? I ask because I have that Iomega Tape 260 insider,
but mine is on an Iomega controller card for increased speed and I did
not see any support for qic-80 controlers, other than for Conner and
Colorado (i think) in this software. Thanks, in advance

Note (for the casual bystander), this is true on the Colorado because
the Colorado drive already has the needed firmware support. Other
drives, e.g. my Conner 250, don't have the firmware (nor is Conner
planning to provide it as far as I've know) and will not format the
2120xl tapes although the appropriate software (3M upgrade kit, Win95
Backup, etc) will read and write them just fine.

I use PCTools for Windows 2.0 backup and it works as well...maybe
better, than under win/wfw 3.x. OF course, it doesn't support lfn's,
bu tthat is the trade I decided on, rather than take my Iomega tape
250 off it's own controller and loose the speed it provides over the
floppy controller :-)
