Hola,
Hi ,

I am trying to install a pci tv card but I can not make it work in
Ubuntu 11.04. My hard drive has 2 hlaves, one with windows 7 where the
card works perfectly and a second one with Ubuntu where it does not
work. The card has a chip cx23880. Following some instructions I made
sudo modprobe cx8800and I receive the following message:

WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/plTV, it will be
ignored in a future release.
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/cx88xx, it will
be ignored in a future release.
WARNING: /etc/modprobe.d/cx88xx line 1: ignoring bad line starting
with '“options'

I am new in Ubuntu and I do not know what the above means ¿Can anyone
help me to install it?

Thanks

Before you try anything else, try this. From the command line type:

$ ls -l /dev/video*

Are there three entries, /dev/video0, /dev/video24 and /dev/video32? Or
something similar? If so, then you're done. No modprobe stuff needed.

Chances are good that this will be the case, since the modern kernels
generally can find and load drivers for most hardware just fine.

I have two machines with cx23xxx based tv capture cards and current
kernels for Ubuntu and Fedora detect and load drivers for them just fine.

Odd.. (pan, for those interested)

Anyway, you have /dev/video0, which means there is at least one video
device identified and a driver for it is loaded.

Question: Do you have a video player installed that is capable of
playing a .mpg? Examples are mplayer and vlc.

If yes, try this from an xterm:
cat /dev/video0 > a.mpg

Then after about 5 seconds or so, type <CTRL>-C. Then try playing the
file with:
mplayer a.mpg

Note: These files get quite large, on the order of 3 GB / hour of
recording for standard def NTSC, I assume PAL will be similar. DTV may
vary, but probably to the larger. Make sure you have room.

Note #2: The instructions you said you tried following, were they from,
say, 2004 or something? One of the problems with the rapid changes to
Linux, amateurs writing documentation, and websites that never get
updated, is that old instructions for doing "something" stick around long
after they are no longer valid. That is what I think has happened here.
Most drivers for TV capture cards are now part of the mainline kernel and
included in most, if not all, current distros, so all those step by step
instructions are of little use anymore. Unless you want to install
Fedora Core 3 for some odd reason...

Did you try 'cat /dev/video0 > a.mpg'? Yes/No

If yes, what happened? If no, why not?

I know nothing of "me tv" or "tv time", what ever those are. Who ever
wrote them may be clueless...
