I've employed Eudora for a long time without any problems until this
weekend. Previously, I used my own domain for pop and smtp and this
worked just fine.
I had to take my domain off line and decided to try and use my Earthlink
account with Eudora and had mixed results.
I'm currently using version 5.1 in Sponsored Mode on a Windows-98
systems and use Earthlink as my ISP. I also use Agent 1.91 for reading
news and any email related to news.
The first step for me was to set Agent up to use my Earthlink account. I
had no problem and can send and receive email using Agent. I copied the
same settings for POP and SMTP to Eudora replacing the ones I previously
used for the mail servers in my domain. After doing this, I can receive
email, but can no longer send. The email I'm trying to send remains in
my out box with a Q for queued I assume. I get the following error
message:
<Dominant>, Contacting mail.earthlink.net (207.217.120.207), (01:12:47
PM)
Could not connect to "mail.earthlink.net" Cause: connection timed out
(10060)
I searched through the problem solutions database at Earthlink and
copied the settings that are shown there for SMTP. This didn't work. I
tweaked the SMTP address to smtp.earthlink.net with the same result
although this will work with Agent.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Katie McN
Try smtp.earthlink.net (or smtpauth.earthlink.net, for smtp authenticated
connections, useful when you are at a different IP address, such as a
connection at a conference).

Thanks for your suggestion. I tried smtp.earthlink.net previously. I
just now tried smtpauth.earthlink.net and neither works for me. It is
frustrating being able to receive email using Eudora, but not be able to
send messages. I continue to be able to send and receive via the same
account using Agent. ;-(

Try this:
Set your outgoing mail server back to smtp.earthlink.net, then check
your "Secure Sockets when sending" option in the "Sending Mail" tab of
the options dialogue. This should be set to "If Available, STARTTLS"
or "Never."
Hope this works.

Thanks for your suggestion. Sadly, it didn't work either way, but did
give me the idea to see what happens when I change all the setting
related to sending in the various options. Maybe one of them will be the
one. This is probably something weird about Earthlink and I can find
anything in the Earthlink FAQ about rel 5.1 problems like this.

Thanks for mentioning this. I was worried that it was just me. If I ever
find out what the issue is, I'll post it here so there will be a record.

I set my timeout to 900 to no avail. Thanks for the suggestion.

Katie,
Shut down Eudora
Edit the Eudora.ini file with notepad
Go to the DEBUG section (starts with [Debug])
If it is not there, add one -- end of the file is fine.
I think the default log level is 11
LogLevel=11
change it to
LogLevel=35
which I thing should turn on sufficient debugging.
So, you'd have:
[Debug]
LogFileName=EUDORA.LOG
LogFileSize=100
LogLevel=35
Now, fire up Eudora and try to send. When it fails, quit Eudora, open the
log file (created where your mail is and where eudora.ini was), and see if
there is any useful information in the log at the end of the logfile.

It truly sucks since I didn't plan on having to debug this as part of my
server work.

There was no [Debug] so I created one at the end of the INI as suggested
by copying what you provide here.

Here are the results:
I continue to be able to receive all email.
However when I attempt to send using the same settings that work with
Outlook and Earthlink Webmail
results in this error being displayed in the Eudora Error window:
<Dominant>, Contacting mail.earthlink.net (207.217.120.209), [01:01:05
PM]
Could not connect to "mail.earthlink.net" Cause connection timed out
(10060)
The eudora.log files contains this information:
Mon Jul 22 13:02:50 2002
Version 5.1
8561 32:0.0 Sent: "CAPA\r\n"
8561 32:0.0 Sent: "USER katie_mcn\r\n"
8561 32:0.0 Sent: "PASS ********\r\n"
8561 32:0.0 Sent: "STAT\r\n"
8561 32:0.1 Sent: "QUIT\r\n"
It appears that the error is not considered significant although all the
minor actions I did are reported. !?
I still have not had time to contact Earthlink via phone to see if they
have help. Someone suggested this good idea earlier in the thread, but
there is always a couple of hours wasted here when I do this.

It's Me Katie McN
Read My Stories at:

I see the problem.
Eudora is sending POP user name katie_mcn. It *should be*
kati...@earthlink.net. Yes, that entire string.
Fred
Hi Fred,
Thanks for your help. I tried changing the options from katie_mcn to
kati...@earthlink.net. I also tried adding earthlink.net to the option
that asks for a domain to add to unqualified email addresses. All of
this was to no avail since I got this again:
Wed Jul 24 11:32:47 2002
Version 5.1
823 32:0.0 Sent: "CAPA\r\n"
823 32:0.0 Sent: "USER kati...@earthlink.net\r\n"
823 32:0.1 Sent: "PASS ********\r\n"
823 32:0.1 Sent: "STAT\r\n"
823 32:0.1 Sent: "UIDL\r\n"
823 32:0.1 Sent: "QUIT\r\n"
6823 32:5.0 Sent: "CAPA\r\n"
6823 32:5.1 Sent: "USER kati...@earthlink.net\r\n"
6823 32:5.1 Sent: "PASS ********\r\n"
6823 32:5.1 Sent: "STAT\r\n"
6823 32:5.1 Sent: "UIDL\r\n"
6823 32:5.2 Sent: "QUIT\r\n"
The part that is confusing to me is how I can receive mail with the data
I put in the Options, but can't send via the same settings. Truly sucks.
BTW are you using release 5.1? I assume you use smtp.earthlink.net to
send email.
Katie
The problem listed below prevented me from sending any email for the
last couple of weeks. I couldn't figure it out and couldn't find
anything at Eudora/Qualcom or Earthlink to fix it either.
I really got lucky when Fred Avolio noticed the thread and helped me.
Little did I know that he is a world class consultant on email and many
other techie things. He found the solution to the problem and is
probably a good guy to contact if someone needs a very talented
consultant for email, communications security or related communications
topics. He is a guru as you can see from his website. He can be reached
here
Here is what happened. I used Luxline to host a server on their UNIX
box. When we were setting up email, we ran across an Earthlink glitch
where my use of another server caused earthlink to think I was trying to
do something "bad". Luxline suggested I use port 5190 instead of 25 for
SMTP. When I switched Agent from katiemcn.com to earthlink.net the port
change was long forgotten and caused the incompatibility. When Fred had
me use the correct port setting in my INI all was well. I can now send
email to all and sundry.
In the process of helping me, Fred found out that I too was a writer,
but not as classy as he. If you're curious about what I write, the URL
is part of my sig. I did win some writing prizes to include Best Author
of the Year for alt.sex.stories.moderated so if that sort of thing is a
problem, you've been warned.
Thanks Fred!!
