crashing - getting rid of the eudora.ini file seems to help - any idea why?

Dear all, hope you can help:

* Eudora started crashing today
* the log file reported problems with the LMOS files so I got rid of the tmp files in the spool folder
* thinking that the problem might be in a recently received email, I changed the names of in.mbx and in.toc - that did not help
* in a flash of inspiration, I renamed the eudora.ini file - and that works; Eudora starts up fine, has all my mailboxes but of course not the settings and everything else.

What could be in the ini file that causes Eudora to crash? (or to put it more precisely, not to start up at all)?

Win 7, Eudora 7.1.0.9
My other instance of Eudora runs fine, so the problem is not the connection, or Windows. ( I have two instances of Eudora running next to each other - one of the reasons why I want to keep on using Eudora - though I can name many more reasons).

If I knew how, I could attach the log file and the ini.file ...
This is the log about the original faulty situation:

On what version(s) of MS Windows?

For each separate instance of Eudora that you run,
please post the complete "Application" and "Data" paths
seen when "Help" > "About Eudora" is invoked
(you can click on either of these paths to open them directly in Windows)

The following is less drastic than deleting or renaming Eudora.ini,
and preserves the account info (personalities):
<http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1929hq.html>

However, if your "Data" is stored within what in English is called "program files,"
or other "protected" areas in Vista, Win7, Win8, or any later version of Windows,
there may still be ongoing problems.

Any overlap of file areas used by multiple instances of Eudora,
running at the same time, may also turn out to be in conflict.

By the way, your filters are in a separate data file (filters.pce),
any address books each have their own file, etc.
Here's a partial list of files in each Eudora "Data" folder:
<http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1602hq.html>

Eudora dynamically searches your "Data" folder for current mailboxes
when launched, so there is no file listing all the mailboxes.

Thank you for the compliment ;-)

mmmm I really had to search for this info, well hidden in the nooks and crannies of windows ( which I try to ignore as much as I possibly can):

windows 7 starter, service pack 1

data files are stored where I want them ;-) in top level directories (e.g. c:\eudoratenso\etc (and for the other instance of eudora, c:\eudorazazie\etc)

the two (and sometimes even more) instances have been running next to each other quite happily for the past ?? years, (at least fifteen, since I started using Eudora on PC after banishing Mac from my life, that is). so I really think that the problem is caused by an infected mail, a weird connection error, something from outside. what did happen this afternoon is that all of a sudden, eudora started complaining about not being able to connect to the relay smtp server - I blamed that on the (mobile) connection but with hindsight it may have been an indication of something worse?

thank you for the suggestion for a 'light' change of the ini file - however, this seems to require having the programme actually up and running - which it does not. so the only thing I can do is change names of files in explorer....

I hope this sheds some more light on the matter, and again, thank you so much for helping me find out what is the matter ! Zazie

Dear Dennis

ah, yes, - you are right - but on the other hand, the spaces have been there for ever so I would not assume that that is causing the trouble

about the LMOS files: perhaps I was unclear - I did not delete the LMOS files in the spool folders, since they are innocent enough, but I deleted all .tmp files in the spool folders - which did not solve the problem

My best suggestion, if you have a Eudora "install" that IS working,
would be to open both INI files in side-by-side editors and look for
anything significantly different (and which can not be explained as being
part of an "install" -- that is, ignore passwords, user accounts, but
confirm the directories shown).

very good suggestion, I will try that !

[can't reset Eudora.ini because Eudora crashes when opening]

You might be able to "reset Eudora.ini" if you move that file
into an empty folder, say on your desktop,
then launch Eudora by dragging that folder
and dropping it on the Eudora.exe program file.

After resetting the .ini file,
copy the final Eudora.ini (and the automatically made backup)
back to the original folder.

Alternatively, here's an old Eudora Tech Support note:

"Crashes When Opening"
<http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1735hq.html>

Somewhere, where they talk about copying certain lines
of Eudora.ini, be sure to include "POPAccount=" lines.
