Those of you who follow the Intel forums already know this, but I
figured it was time to announce it here. I will be retiring from Intel
at the end of this year, after more than 38 years in the (mostly
Fortran) business. You can read more about this at
http://intel.ly/2eomo4E

Since I wrote that "Doctor Fortran" post last month, some things have
become clearer. While I have already resigned my position as an Intel
alternate to the Fortran standards committee, Tom Knox of Kernelyze, a
new member, has graciously offered to make me his alternate so that I
can keep up with what the committee is doing. I may even attend meetings
from time to time.

Depending on how I feel about things, I may pick up occasional
Fortran-related consulting tasks. What is definite is that I will remain
a presence on comp.lang.fortran and in the Intel forums from a personal
account, though my perspective (and posting volume) will be a bit different.

First, though, I will take a break from all things Fortran for a month,
just to get my bearings.

You'll see other Intel support folk in here, most notably Kevin Davis.
Those of you who are Intel Fortran customers have probably interacted
with Kevin for years, but he has not been as public as I have. He's also
more polite than I am! Please treat him well!

It's been a good career and I'm ready for what's next.

Dear Steve,

I cannot say how much I liked your Dr. Fortran, thank you very very very much for your help, it has been a great resource for many of us.

You are a great Fortraner.

All my best wishes for your future.

Welcome to retirement. You'll probably be busier than ever, just doing
different things (more slowly ;) ). Don't watch to much TV. ;)

I wish you all the best. 38 years is a long time, but I now realize
that it has been 17 years since I made my pilgrimage to Nashua, where
you were kind enough to be my host and allow a glimpse into the Holy of
Holies (the former DEC offices, of course).

I attended a meeting once, in Trollhättan in Sweden; if my life changes,
maybe I'll attend again sometime.

Reminds me of some years ago when I was a student, and there was
a retirement celebration (cake included) for a favorite professor.

Among the announcements from other professors was:

"We hope this won't interfere too much with your work."

I think many of us enjoy reading your posts, and learn much from them.

We hope you will still be posting for years to come.

thanks, and good luck in your retirement.

Congratulations on your retirement; I remember you solving a Fortran problem

Best wishes for your new career beyond work! Fortunately (for us) you
promise to not leave the Fortran community -- looking forward to more
insight in this group and elsewhere, it has always been appreciated.

Steve, I wish you a second career at least as long as the first on.

38 years mostly with Fortran is quite long... But I just noticed that I
wrote my first Fortran 66 program in 1979, i.e. 38 years ago !

My first Fortran program was in 1972, but I just figured that my
first VAX Fortran program was in 1979.

Thank to Steve for sharing his knowledge of Fortran in general and Digital/Compaq/Intel Fortran in particular, and for his work on Fortran compilers. It has been important for Fortran's continued viability that Digital created a quality Fortran 90+ compiler for Windows and that Intel now does so, for both Windows and Linux.

I'm another retiree. Steve has taught me a lot over the years especially when replying to my bug reports. Some were not bugs because I had misunderstood the Fortran standard; some found bugs in the standard, not in Intel's compiler; but some were Intel bugs that were duly dealt with.

I hope Intel will treat Steve the way my university treated one of my older colleagues, who said "I think emeritus professor is the best job in the university. It doesn't pay as much as being a real professor but you can do exactly what you want to."

Wow this is really the end of an era and quite sad in my view.

I wish you the best and thanks for all the FORTRAN and Fortran.

I now look at this newsgroup only occasionally, so I saw this only
today. I hope it is not too late to wish you all the best and say you a
great THANK YOU !

PS
Is it a chance that you circulated your message on Nov 2 ? (which in my

Just a coincidence, but my choice of October 2 for my blog post
(https://software.intel.com/en-us/blogs/2016/10/02/doctor-fortran-in-thirty-eight)
was deliberate.

Thanks for the kind words, and expect to see me in c.l.f from time to time.
