Trying to initialize (for the first time) an IDS on a HP712/60 I get the
error message in online.log:

17:36:01 Event alarms enabled. ALARMPROG =
'/users/work/informix/etc/log_full.sh'
17:36:02 Assert Failed: net_init.c, line 272, thread 1, errno=13, error
in creating /INFORMIXTMP.
17:36:02 Informix Dynamic Server Version 7.30.UC6
17:36:02 Who: Session(0, @, 0, 0)
Thread(1, main_thread, 0, 1)
File: called by ASF mt_affail Line: 0
17:36:37 See Also: /users/work/informix/tmp/af.1e0e1, shmem.1e0e1.0
17:36:46 net_init.c, line 272, thread 1, errno=13, error in creating
/INFORMIXTMP.
17:36:46 PANIC: Attempting to bring system down

immediately after that the engine crashes

What does "Assert Failed: net_init." really means, why can INFORMIXTMP
not be created (although it already exists)
Could there be any kernel parameter set to a wrong value?

Any help will certainly be appreciated...

Can you reviews the kernel parameters?, specially semaphores parameters I
think they are wrong
values. I had a similary problem with the SCO 5.0.5 and IDS 7.31 and some
semaphores parameters had wrong.

Your problems with /INFORMIXTMP could indicate that your software
installation has been corrupted. Check permissions on files in
$INFORMIXDIR/bin. Here are the correct values of some

-rwsr-sr-- 1 root informix 11840265 May 1 12:21 oninit
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root informix 1261253 May 1 12:21 onmode
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root informix 2621240 May 1 12:21 onmonitor
-rwxr-sr-x 1 informix informix 1532870 May 1 12:19 onparams
-rwxr-sr-x 1 informix informix 1524653 May 1 12:19 onspaces
-rwxr-sr-x 1 informix informix 2145864 May 1 12:19 onstat

I hope you got it running by now. Error 13 most probably indicates
"Permission denied" - a problem of access rights. It may be caused by
Informix installation problems or access rights to the "/" directory
