Renaming an asset

Is is possible to change the name (tag) of  an asset in collins?

I tried this a long time ago, and the only way I could figure out was database surgery and then reindexing solr.

Yeah, asset ids are supposed to be static.  If you don't need to maintain the history of the asset, you could delete the old tag from collins and re-intake your server with the new tag.
