Performance penalty if running Galera over VMware layer

Is there a performance penalty if running Galera over VMware layer please? 

Has the cluster need to be run on physical servers please?

Hello,

Galera Cluster can run on VMWare. The performance penalty would be the same
as the one experienced by a stand-alone MySQL server. In addition, Galera
Cluster also requires good, low-latency networking, so make sure your VM
uses the right network drivers for maximum performance.
