Galera cluster
1) is a SYNCHRONOUS replication system
2) every node is fully representative of the cluster, that is, it
carries all the data.
Every node in the cluster CAN be a master (source of updates), but every
node IS a slave. While this technically covers the problem as you
stated, chances are this is not what you want.

In short:
- you disconnect and create Galera cluster out of your slaves
- you make one of the cluster nodes a slave to the master
- when the cluster catches up with the master, you reidrect the load to
the cluster
- convert the master to Galera node and join the rest
