"rooting" an Android tablet

Dear CoderdojoDC!
I wonder if anyone might be able to advise me how dangerous/tricky it is to "root" an Android tablet in order to install aftermarket boot ROM? Specifically, a child who used to come with us to the Dojo quite frequently has an Asus TransformerPad that he'd like to be able to upgrade to Android 4.4, which is a version not supported for that particular device by Android. Here's an example of what his dad was thinking about trying:

I realize this is a rather specific question. Mainly I was just hoping that somebody might have done this sort of thing before might be able to offer us a little sage advice.
