Do any of you have any experience with something like: http://www.vhipe.com/product-private/SuperPID-Home.htm

Seems interesting and possibly worth the money if it is as easily adjustable as it seems to be.

I don't have any direct experience with it, but I hear good things about it.  I have been tinkering with a schematic to do the same thing with the Quiet Cut DC spindles.  I would really like to see it if you get one.

Sounds good,

I finally broke down and ordered my shapeoko kit to get me started (finally after 2 years of research etc hah) so as soon as i get the kit and put it together i think that might be one of my first upgrades.

I believe several JoeCNC builder guys use the superpid. I have not really found much use for it as you need to take apart a router to install it. When you wear out a router you will be uninstalling and reinstalling it. With a shapeoko and a small trim router as a spindle you would never spin a bit less than max speed so not sure why for a trim router you would ever want it. Most superpid installs I've seen are on 7518 Porter Cable routers on larger machines by guys not wanting to invest the time in a spindle. I went with a 2.2kw 3hp water cooled spindle and vfd. Controlling the vfd does anything I need it to do. On your shapeoko use relays/contactors to control start and stop and a digital tach will tell you what speed you are running at. Cost is about $10 ea. You will stopping for each bit change anyway so adjust your bit speed then if you need to.
