We got to see some of Bart Dring's plans for a tiny coaster-making laser engraver, and to get a live demo of the PS1 CNC plasma cutter. Several attendees stuck around until later on that night we got the first part of our authorization to use the CNC plasma cutter done, now each of us has only to prepare a file and run it with some supervision to be fully authorized to use that machine 24/7

Pretty cool! We're looking for other things like that to do next month.

If you have suggestions about things you want to show off, things you want to see or do, or field-trip like places to go to or even to have the meetups at a different location, let me know.

I'd like to get some flyers and notices up at companies and universities/schools around Chicago as well, let me know if that gives you any ideas or if you have some places you could flyer up or promote this meetup.

Hello Ray,

I was wondering if you were the club leader? I am a CNC enthusiast working to create my first CNC machine. I was wondering if there are times available to meet with you in person or through Hangout to discuss some of the finer details?

Thank you,
Isaiah

I'm not really the leader as much as a member that wanted to see the meetings continue ... and it's not even so much a club despite the name as a random collection of PS1 members and non-members that share an interest and come to meetings when they feel like it.

I'm also not the guy to ask about technical things relating to CNC DIY work!! One of the reasons I stepped in and became the Meetup.com group owner was that I wanted to keep those experts coming back and invite more so that I can learn and we can all benefit from each other.

So ... my best advice for you from here, other than come to meetings and see what random assortment of people you run into, would be to post to the CNC Build Club google group about your issues/areas of interest, maybe post the public Google Group for Pumping Station: One, and maybe ... join PS1 or one of the other local makerspaces/hackerspaces/incubators to best get to know who these people are (experts, hobbyists, etc.)

Ps-1 is a fantastic space but it can be a bit of a haul if you're living in Elgin.
I'm a member of workshop88 in Glen Ellen (somewhat closer) and we have a CNC build club as well.  We're a lot smaller and no-where as well equipped as PS-1, but we have a lot of fun.   The group meets on Tuesdays, but for the moment we're keeping it as a members only event.  We do have an open night on Thursday, where a bunch of the guys who are involved in our Cnc club are present. (If you're interested in checking us out, feel free to check us out on our open night)

Eventually, I'd like to do a monthly CNC open night at workshop88, but keeping it members only event is working for us at the moment.  Our open-nights turn into a yak-fest/performance art/social sort of night  and nothing really gets accomplished.
Our Tuesdays oth have become rather productive.

Also, there is a guy in Elgin who's working on a robot-arm that he's doing a start up on.   His name escapes me at the moment (if no one knows  who I'm talking about, I'm sure I have his card somewhere)  I constantly am running into him at mini-maker faires..  You might want to reach out to him.  Perhaps you could start a  CNC meet up going in Elgin.  Actually thinking about it, he was saying he was going to pop in to workshop88 but I haven't  seen him yet.  Hmm perhaps we could have him present on our first CNC open night.... Sorry... I digress......

Current w88 projects include the clubs Sieg CNC mill,  a couple of our members are building Prusa  3d printer scratch builds  (aka the Sam Bell build)   and I'm working on a MPCNC using machinekit,  We also do a fair amount of machine maintenance on our printers, laser cutter on Tuesdays.

Regards,
Tom

I am a graphic designer and web designer. So a lot of my projects are in the digital or print space. However, I am working on putting together a CNC Machine I have many of the components on a small scale. I hope to use my traditional skills as a designer to experiment with robotics.

Really excited to meet, learn and hangout with you guys!
