In doing my research, I found the MPCNC as it is known. If anyone has any experience with this, I would love to hear about it.
One nice thing about this is you can make it pretty much any size you want, and it will be like a Shapeoko in ability. It uses conduit or stainless 1" tubing, so you can run wild.
The website is: www.vicious1.com
I got their electronics bundle for 260ish(see the site for exact pricing), and the pre primary Ted parts for 160ish so I didn't have to print them myself.
The machine is some form of open source, so you can download the BoM and make your own. The 3d printed parts have downloadable files so you can print them yourself. There are a number of mods and upgrades in thingieverse. Iwas lazy.
I ambuilding the 1" (25.4mm) version and used the stainless tubing to make a usable work size of 2x3feet, and with the overhangs, it makes for a tables use of 3x4.
The table is a torsion box with 1/2 in. plywood top and bottom skins. The internal webbing will be spaced 9" apart and is 3/4 poplar, 3" wide. I will cut half laps for the lattice before I glue it together. 3'x4'x4"
Before adding in the top skin, I am going to add reinforced pockets in the corners so I can add legs when necessary, but generally I figure it will be on my table saw when in use.
Finally, I decided to not use the recommended router. While not a bad budget choice, is not how I wanted to go. In looking at the forums, I took heed of people's advice to not overload it with something too big, it is after all, a Shapeoko competitor not a shopbot competitor as far as the class of machine.
With have used the Shapeoko quite a bit, I went for the 500w spindle from Amazon.

You might want to run a drill or reamer down the holes. Also don't go nuts overtighten the bolts. The x-y bearing blocks tend to crack if you rack the gantries. Its very repairable though with a soldering iron and pla filament.
