Hi everyone! It's been awhile since I've been on here and and at PS:One!

What's everyone up to?

There was some concern from a member today that they came out for CNC hours and that it didn't appear to be hosted. I think we had a few people today that I recognized from past meet-ups but maybe he wanted to do authorizations? Getting back in the mix of things and catching up with changes, I hope to better direct others who have also been out of the loop.

Anyways, it's great to be back. I hope everyone is having an awesome summer! See you around!

It was cancelled because there were no RSVPs to speak of (one person who wasn't an organizer) and none of the usual organizers could make it.

I'd have to say ... if anyone wants to stay on top of anything that's ordinarily run with the help of a meetup.com event, that it's worth it to RSVP so we know who is coming and any and all changes to time, place or other things are communicated to all attendees.

Welcome back, Jeremy.

I'd like to see this group become a cool thing. The common thread of my physical making ps1 is centered around CNC. I would welcome a monthly meetup, as there a good number of PS1 CNC people: artists, artisans, designers, engineers and other nifty people who are friendly and kind IRL. We can talk about the status of the machines, updates on the area (we can distill some of that from GG, if need be.)

The next one is Aug 3 and we can be super clear that at least 1 person would be there, and worst case I can just have a conversation with whoever shows up, and at least understand where they're at as a maker, and answer some questions.

Kathyryn where have you been?

it HAS been a monthly thing .. this is the first time in a year that it was cancelled on short notice ... and because ultimately I didn't have my car fixed yet ... even with only ONE person RSVPing I would have shown up if I could have. If folks want the door open and the PS1 host to host the space and place ... just freakin' RSVP.

But/Abd ... if you want a monthly thing, then come ... monthly. I've been paying for the Meetup account out of pocket since it went without an organizer, for over a year now ... and would of course like more participation but it doesn't happen by saying a monthly meetup would be nice. I have asked PS1 to start picking up the tab for the meetup fees by adding it into the PS1 fold, we'll see how that goes.

CNC Build Club predates me by a pretty fair piece, and has suffered through one big issue ... most of the CNC Build Club energy at the start was from people who tried and failed to build a CNC machine, or tried and succeeded and went off on their own tangent. The original impetus for CNC Build Club might have been something like the expiration of the patents on 3D printing and the overenthustiastic masses that all thought they wanted to build one vs. buy one. It can be more but for it to grow and thrive people have to actually build things, new or otherwise. Andrew Wingate and Bart Dring have been instrumental in keeping that in the spotlight but others have to come forward and at least try to make a CNC thing. I'd like to make a drawbot, that should be doable, right?

NOW THEN! I also purchased (some months ago) a copy of "Making Things Move" which has a ton of projects that are not so daunting and I would like to do a few of them myself.

Myself with others? Sure ... myself alongside others doing the same or similar things? Sure. Whatever. I want to bring in people from all over, the schools and businesses and further out than just PS1 and to THAT END I'd like help posting to facebook groups, twitter, and most importantly and often overlooked ... actual physical bulletin boards across the city and surrounding area.

I'll make the flyer if you can print out a few and pin them up in places you happen to get to.

i would come much more often but literally half the meetings are scheduled for days i have conflicts / out of town.

i have printed the parts for a mostly printed cnc https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:724999 that i hope to make some progress with soon to use as my main painting machine.

i am also in the process of ordering a Shapeoko 3 - to use mostly for cutting.

i am feeling bad coz i have been a member now for ~5 months and haven’t made anything at PS1 yet. i just got a new studio space - and i am working to get that up and running. the logistics of hauling big bits of material too and from PS1 has put the dampers on me - but enough of that

hmmm. anyhow - sorry for being so distant - i hope to see you all soon irl.

Response in-line :)

I've been at my "other hackerspace."  Really, I have some work calls and webinar classes at night. Like from July 25, for 5 weeks I can't go to the member meeting because of a migraine surgery class.

Ok, that's fine, but that's not ... technically...  how the PS1 calendar works - if that's the new system, then maybe add to the calendar event "Check meetup to make sure at least 1 person is attending." And we could also post on GG, 24 hours in advance, that it's not meeting due to low RSVP. That's one thought.

But the other option - I see what you're trying to do by investing in Meetup, but if PS1 won't pick up the tab and you're not getting any benefit by hosting/posting/paying, they I would suggest the possibility of scrapping it, and just re-building the group on a grassroots level. I can post to FB for free, have 3,000 art friends.

Sure. I guess I would ask if we want to re-group, re-calibrate and see if we can have decent attendance on 8/3 - then just go around the room and ask what they would want out of monthly CNC group. I know the video game group is only 4 meetings old, but right now we're just asking everyone what they want to learn and see, and then building little demos around things people are interested in, and talk about what we want to do next time. Video game making means different things to different people - and this can make for a varied and fun group with almost no overlap of skill sets. Similarly, CNC is different than 7 years ago. I was around PS1 a bit in 2010 and the entire organization was all about the 3D printers. Then it got more mainstream. Today, speaking for myself, I don't want to make a machine, I want the machine to make what I want made. I can't even hollow out an fucking elephant model. I'm trying to figure out how to model custom supports because I hate the supports some software builds in. Anyone else want to nerd out and talk about rafts and supports for 20 minutes? I do. V-carve? Toolpaths? Got a project and you don't know if you should you a carver or a laser cutter, come on in, no experience required.

I know Ash and Matt and others are giving it hell trying to get these machines working, and having some wins, so updates and demos would be great. Folks like you who put in a lot of time authorizing and user support and have an ear to the ground of new users ... that's discussion worthy. We had offline emails where we tried to gauge which 3D printers would make the most people happy, that's also a good IRL discussion to have.

I don't know, we can get people together and ask.

Tom, turn your frown upside down and I can bring beer or anything else that would incentivize you to attend, you're a legend :) And speaking of Skapeoko 3, we could understand the obstacles of the old one we've got that I know folks are working on.

Wait - one quick thing. The name of this group: was this designed to be a "CNC - Build-one  Club" or "CNC Build-shit-with-one" Club?

Meaning, is this group really about building a CNC machine, and if there's not a huge interest, changing the mission, for a while, to a CNC User Group?

Maybe that's the first question to ask on 8/3, and in the GG reminder...  And you all can say "Stick it, this is about building CNC machines and if we change the mission of the meeting, I'm out." That would be important feedback.

That's a good question. It's always been a hardware-oriented group.
There's also a Fusion360 group that seems to come and go.

I see 3D printers and CNC routers as entirely different things, although
there are a lot of similarities in the hardware (laser cutters are sort
of like routers, except when they're not).

It might be worth starting a new group for 3D printing strategy. I don't
think it matters what you call it.

Personally, I'm not interested in 3D printing at all. I've attended the
Fusion360 groups sporadically (except when I'm out of town). The
hardware group is interesting when it has things to talk about, but it
hasn't been meeting often enough to be a repeating event on the
calendar.

Hi Ron et al,

Thank you for saying that's a good question, because after I posted, I felt like it might have been the dumbest post I've ever written.

Maybe the attitude is think about interest for a group that would meet once a month, and only think about the focus of the group for the next 3-6 months. I always veer toward rookie content, which can alienate the more advanced users, which is a concern. But for new people, I think we share the common of: I want to make a _________ that ________s, and I've got a model/design, but how would I actually make it? I don't even know what machine to use, half the time.

The group could also touch on several topics, briefly, in a 2-hour set. Again, with the video game example, we do some code for the programers, modeling for the modelers, and (hopefully, soon) art, writing and game theory for the artists.
