Still many competing definitions for various flavors of cloud computing. The hybrid cloud is no exception.

One Example:  "... common architecture spanning traditional IT, private, managed and public clouds." Source/perspective: This definition (in this case from HP http://ow.ly/abjgR) speaks to the reality that a variety of IT types are employed within an organization, not just one (say traditional IT or public cloud, there's a mix). But this is only one example in a world of competing definitions and perspectives.

Two questions: What is your definition for the hybrid cloud/hybrid delivery? In a world of multiple approaches, is a common definition important?

For me the key defining characteristic of a "hybrid" is process/data sharing "across" the corporate firewall with an external cloud (application), that is, either an on-premise or cloud solution is sharing/dependent data and/or behavior with its peer on the opposite side of the firewall.

(note that the on-premise application or data source need not be deployed on a private cloud/virtualization layer, its the co-location of data and/or behavior that is the key characteristic)
