Undocking Technology Question

Anyone know anything about the undocking technology interface used in the NYC bike-share system? What sort of contactless protocol is used to authenticate user/fob information and release a bike for undocking? Are users currently able to unlock bikes with credit cards/ID cards or are the annual membership fobs the only form of ‘keys’ available to users today?

I work at a tech company that is considering including compatible technology into future state-issued identification cards.
