As the Woodshop Warden it's my responsibility to have people renew for the long term project storage in the woodshop.  I'm going to do the renewal from Now until March, just to keep things simple, because we fell out of step for a moment.  There is also a large pile of wood in a corner next to the long term storage.  If it's your wood, please take it home, or move it into large project storage.  As it stands, it's also not possible to use the 3-4 slots closest to the wall easily.  If you want help with this please let me know.

I have the following names, please just indicate that you're using the space.  I have added this page to the wiki to track things, instead of using the monthly tags.  I'm also planning on numbering the slots, but for now just indicate that you're using your space.  Currently we also have at least one Hive member who has indicated they would like a space, I'm sure there are others.  If you want space, please indicate that, and I'll add you to the waiting list.  Those who have space please be considerate of others.  I think we can find a few empty spaces if we just handle the unlabelled spaces/Hive storage correctly.

Also we have a couple of unlabeled spots in the large project storage.

Both this and the wood in the corner needs to be claimed and dealt with by December 31st, or I will consider it abandoned and put it on the wood scrap pile.  If you have a slot and do not claim it, and leave the wood in that slot, I will make every attempt to contact you, and then the wood will be moved to the wood scrap pile.

As things currently stand it's getting very cluttered in the woodshop, and I'd like to cut down on that.

People who have space
Daniel McNamara
Tom Meyer
Lorin Parker
Jon Neal
James Hartley
Coy Paeltz
Ryan Hersey
Mike Howarth
Elly Hall
Myself

People who want space
Alex MacDonald

People who have tags on exactly the same space
Dan/Tom - Not sure if they're sharing, or if the tag got moved.

Please forgive me if I'm misspelled your name.

Here are pictures of all the unclaimed spaces.  If it's your wood, please let me know.  (Yes, I know the pictures show claimed spaces as well)

Daniel and Tom are sharing a space.  This was because neither needed a whole space but still wanted materials down at the Hive.  Combining spaces and sharing is a great way to save space.  I had a few people interested in that type of arrangement as well.

I created and managed the storage myself while I was warden for over a year, so you can also ask me for help/transitioning into that project if you want :)

I would like to keep my space, as I use it and the wood in it at least weekly.

Thanks, I knew there was another doubled up space.  Is this confirmation that Mike wants to hold onto it?

Thanks, it was confusing to me because we have a couple of doubled up spaces, often right next to unlabeled spaces.

I'm aware, I linked to your project in the new wiki page.  ;)  I might have a question about making new owner labels/using the laminating machine, otherwise I think I'd like to move the record keeping to the wiki.  I suspect that the owners aren't going to change a lot.  Totally promise not to make myself certified at everything!  ;)

A quick update.  I've added numbers to the top of the slots, and I've updated the wiki accordingly.  Numbering starts from the wall and works out.

Still waiting to hear about the random bits shoved into various unlabeled slots.

Also I have the following people who still haven't indicated that they want to keep their slots:
Tom Meyer/Daniel McNamara
Jon Neal
Coy Paeltz
Ryan Hersey/Mike Howarth

Once again if I don't hear from the people in those slots I'll be contacting them, and then moving anything unclaimed into the wood scrap pile.

I'm pretty sure Ryan Hershey will be keeping his spot as we use the wood to build makerfaire stuff from his, and I was going to be throwing my makerfaire stuff in that one....so I wouldn't get rid of that one. I know Ryan has been really busy with work lately.

Could be, you'll notice I'm giving people over a month to respond to this before anything drastic is done.  If the people using the spot can't respond in a month, then maybe temporary project storage isn't for them.  It also doesn't seem fair to hold a spot for somebody who can't respond in a timely manner when we've got two people waiting.

Done.  That leaves Jon Neal, and Coy.

It also sounds like nobody knows anything about the random bits of stuff that have been jammed into the various slots.

1st slot has what looks like green insulation foam, and bits of the door used to make the long table with the radial arm saw.
4th slot has a bunch of blank yellow sheet foam or placards.
9th slot has a bunch of OSB and plywood scraps.

This weekend I'll probably be moving some of this random stuff into the wood scrap and re-organizing so that we have slots for Alex and Tim G.

Not trying to be an ass but I really don't think december is the month to really set deadlines. Just out of thought for the holidays and what it entails for people who especially have their work use and abuse them I would motion to extend the wood storage / moving of stuff / getting spots figured out...say maybe January 14th? That way with 2 extra weeks it gives people the time who want to move their stuff out of storage. People making travel plans, family plans, massive amounts of kids activities, and for those who do out reach and charitable stuff are already stretched thin.

I understand the desire to give people extra time, and I see what you're saying, but really we just need them to respond to this thread.  If they don't have time to respond to a thread on the official mailing list, then maybe they shouldn't have things in temporary storage.  They're clearly not actively working on the project, or engaged in the community.

Dec 31st gives them gave them approximately six weeks from the initial post, which is half the time between re-ups.  If we extend it as you suggest then we're at 2 months, so why even have a system where they have to re-up every 3 months?

If they need some time to get things done, I can work with that.  If they can't be bothered to respond in six weeks, I don't think 2 months is going to help, and I think it's reasonable to give their space to somebody who is interested.

I also need to balance this with the people who want space, and potentially new members who will want space in the future.  What do you think we should tell people on the waiting list when we have no space because people are so inactive they can't respond to a thread?

Not to play the bad guy, but Coy has had plenty of opportunity to voice his opinion and has responded that he's amenable to selling  some of the wood, and removing his personal "medium" CNC router. He's not raised an objection to the removal date, nor has he asked for additional time etc. He's been rather active in the thread, and was present when the vote was proposed.

Also I agree with Dave B. :P

I didn't initially respond because I wanted more clarity on what was going to be done with the vote and you mentioned you were going to give people 30 days to respond. Has it even been a week? What I told Andrew in his private message to me was I'd give up my spot IF we kept the better CNC storage. The proposal at the meeting never mentioned removing the CNC storage and we discussed keeping sheets down there for people to use. It can be moved somewhere else if he wants to use that space differently. I'm very flexible to change but I'd hate to lose something that I believe is important to the CNC area and the main reason I am a paying member.

I did mention it to him :)  We have 30 more days for people to respond.  No need to make a stressful/rushed deal out of this.

I did the renewals for a year and a half, and sometimes you just have to private message people to get a response.  This is a trend you all will find is common as you are around more, especially in an environment where it is personal and fun for most folks.  People don't read everything ASAP that goes on the mailing list.  Which is where, as leadership or someone who has a part in running the space, emailing people privately comes into the equation of being as excellent as possible to our members, (especially around an important thing that requires participation from most members, think when we need quorum and need to hear from 75% of the membership ;) ).  Yes it is more work for us, but after long days of family and work not everyone wants to read through our very active mailing list more than a few times a week or month.  (And yes, that might mean they miss out on a talk, a vote or a class).

RE: the CNC machine and the woodshop

What about
a) removing the medium CNC
b) make the CNC PC tower mobile (if it isn't already)
c) rotating the big CNC 90º and putting it into the corner (with space around it to allow use of the widest ShopVac).

This would keep stuff from accumulating behind it (well, quickly accumulating behind it), while freeing up the rest of the space.

I've had similar thoughts.  I don't see any advantage to have the large CNC exposed on three sides, while some of the other tools really benefit from having a wide working area, either to move material around, or to feed in and out.  I'd like to see our thinkness planer in a little more permanent position, preferably some place where it's possible to feed in/take out at least 8' of board.

The problem I see with moving the large CNC is the current electrical connections.  The large control box on the wall + whatever power it needs.  Not sure what that would require.

@Clay - I remember, I need to either find the old binder clips, or make a new set.  I do have a label for you (and Alex and Tim as well).
