Dear netters,

I download HanaMin A and B fonts from
http://fonts.jp/hanazono/

and install them by double clicking.

I am interested in using some characters in CJK Unified Ideographs Extension C and D, for example, U+2AE5A and U+2B7BB. After install, I encounter a very weird situation:
those characters are not shown in character palette. (restarting the computer does not improve the situation) However, Unicode Checker can display the glyph in the display window, but not in the thumbnail list. Please see the attached screen shot.  The strangest thing is that the lower left corner box of the palette does show the glyph in HanaMinB font.

As a verification, I visit Unihan lookup web page
http://www.unicode.org/cgi-bin/GetUnihanData.pl?codepoint=U%2B2ae5a

The local font glyph is not shown in the box labeled as "your browser." It seems that the system cannot populate the glyphs in the font in the code plane.

My system is not the latest. It's Mac OS X 10.6.8 on MacBook Pro. I thought Mac OS X 10.6.8 is new enough to handle CJK Unified Ideographs Extension C and D, as long as a proper font is provided.

Any one had the same problem before?

Thanks in advance.

Hello -

Many thanks for pointing out these amazing fonts. Using Mac OS 10.8.5, I dragged the font files to the font book, and it installed them correctly with no difficulty.

Dear netters,

Good news. Regarding the problem in my previous post, I found a solution. It is solved by deleting / rebulding the font cache. For Mac OS X 10.5 and beyond, the font cache can be deleted by doing the following command in the terminal (see the article at Mac World 3/13/2009)

To clear the current user’s font cache, first quit all running applications (otherwise, you may see font oddities after using the command), then open Terminal (in Applications -> Utilities) and run this command:
atsutil databases -removeUser
If you want to remove the font cache for all users, use this command, and provide your admin password when asked:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
Once you’ve cleared the caches, you should stop and restart the ATS server with these commands:
atsutil server -shutdown
atsutil server -ping
It will take a second or two for the server to restart, but when it does, you should be good to go. If anything still looks odd, a logout and login should take care of any lingering issues.

The character viewer (palette) screen shot in the attachment shows those characters are now properly populated in the code table.
