Team,
Had an opportunity to talk with the Editor of Parents Network last
night. They would be willing to have an entire paper focusing on
Children in Nature, if we can determine the content to be included and
have the Children in Nature WIKI populated. This is a great
opportunity for us to get the message out.

What Children in Nature article topics would you like to see covered?
Do you have any people in the movement we should cover?

This does look like a good opportunity. I've looked at 4-5 issues of Parents
Network on their web site and the outline of the content generally includes:

Things to do or book list
Children's health, growth and development
Parent wellness
Articles written about different phases of childhood from infancy through
teens
Article(s) written by a parent - may relate to a parent concern
Resource guide
Monthly calendar

The resource guide is what we are working on and the calendar would be a
subset of that work.

There are several local authors related authors - I can send that list.

Nature and children's health - ask Nooshin Razani (pediatrician at the EB
Forum to write an article)

Cover topics related to infancy, early childhood, elementary, and teens --
and different natural areas -- neighborhoods, nature in very urban areas,
schools, parks and open space, and wilderness
(Some of the local authors are also parents and could write some of
these articles)

Do we want to think about core messages or 3-4 things we want parents to
take away from reading this issue? Some possibilities:

- Strengthening family bonds through experiences in nature
- Address parents' fears about nature (this magazine gives significant
attention to common concerns and fears of parents)
- The health benefits of nature (and risks of our increasingly indoor life
and decline of play)

Is the audience for this publication parents in the East Bay -- or does it
cover a wider area?

Thank you for exploring this opportunity -- I can think about more details
of above in the next few days.

Mary,
Would be great to interview local authors. Can you send me the list of
authors?
Richard Louv Arthur of Nature Deficit Disorder will be in SF on April
24. Maybe we could get an interview with him?

Definately think we need to cover Nature and children's health. Can
you see if Nooshin Razani would be willing to write an article?

We definately need to address the "fear" issue. Jane Cecil has done
some research on this topic, and might be able to write something up
for this.
In addition to your core messages, it would be great to have an
article about parents refecting on there own childhood nature
experiences.
The main messages need to motivate parents to get kids/families
outside.

Need to find out if the puplication only covers the East Bay. I will
let you know.

Team,
Does anyone else have any ideas?

Hi Wendy,

We could probably get an interview with Richard Louv in April -- I can check
with his publicist. Included in his interview, can be reference to the
Nature Club for Families toolkit
http://www.childrenandnature.org/movement/naturalfamilies/clubs

Nooshin is part of this google group -- I can also ask her.

A Simple Question
http://www.asimplequestion.org

A Simple Question, chronicles an inspiring story: the STRAW project
(Students and Teachers Restoring a Watershed). The film follows one
fourth-grade classroom's restoration efforts to bring back the endangered
freshwater shrimp in Northern California. Partnering with ranchers,
scientists, government agencies, and local non-profits, this program has
since restored over 22 miles of habitat, galvanized the community, and lead
to significant educational innovations for local classrooms. The STRAW
project serves as testimony to the importance of empowering children, which
in turn transforms us all. The film has screened at over 35 Film Festivals,
garnered more than 10 awards, and is gaining traction with schools and
nature organizations around the country.

I'm sure other books and information will come to mind!

Hi guys, I'd be happy to write something.  Can you please let me know what the timeline is?

Also, I know Damien has put together a group working on addressing the liability concerns/ fear and perhaps he could write about that.  Sharon Danks has also done work on fear/ safety on playgrounds.

Hi All-
Sorry to have been so silent in the midst of all this good progress. I'm working on a family situation that is taking all my time and effort right now. My only quick contribution is this resource for families in the east bay: the public Create-With-Nature Zone at Blake Garden:

Update on the Parents Network articles: Mary Roscoe and I will be
meeting with the editor together in the next 2 weeks. We are going to
request either September or October timeframe for the Children in
Nature topic.

Hi everyone,
This is my first post on the forum.  Zach Pines clued me into this group.  I attended one meeting maybe a year back...

I run a Nature Based Social Skills Group in Tilden Park for children ages 5-12, and I am an MFT Intern/ Child Therapist, and Mindful Parenting Instructor.  I'd be happy to share about the work I do, in theory and practice, in an article.  This sounds super exciting.

I describe my work at www.douglaslerch.com.

Also, I know of some Waldorf educators who work with children in primarily outdoor, nature immersed, Kindergarten, who would likely write an intriguing article.

Best,
Doug

Hi everyone,

I was at Bananas, a childcare referral non-profit, and picked up one of there monthly list of events for children and articles. They would be a good avenue to influence more nature oriented play. They also have workshops for teachers and parents.

There is also Parents Press a newspaper in the SF Bay Area?

Just some thoughts I better share, in case they are useful. ; )

I'll be planting vegetables with classes at my son's school the next few weeks, but let me know if there is a job for me.

Doug,
Thanks for offering to write an article. I'm keeping a list to review
with the Parent Network editor. Will let you know once we figure out
the timimg and the overall theme for the articles.
I added your website to the Children in Nature East Bay Wiki reference
area: http://childreninnaturebayarea.wikia.com/wiki/Reference_Material/_Nature_Curriculum?action=edit

Cassie,
I've added the Bananas class calendar to the wiki. Bananas Nature as
our Playground series is inexpensive and should be good. Thanks for
the information.
Mary and I will be meeting with the Parents Press editor in the next
week or so.
