Hi All,

From time to time it is handy to be able to access another computer in school for remote assistance - Unattended Access is necessary on a olot of occasions.  Is there any free programs to make this possible?

We used to use Logmein when it was free,  We moved to Teamviewer but they see schools as commercial - I ask you.  Chrome CRD is ok but not possible to do unattended access with it.

Thanks Brendan,

I'll follow up on that.  Haven't heard of it before now.  I'll look at the reviews too.

Thanks.

Yes Hassan,

The Laptops are in Domain but often I'm not or they're not so Remote Desktop wouldn't always work.

Thanks

remote desk top should always work, its not that hard to fix it. Windows Remote Desktop is as close to peer to peer as you're gonna get that's really what you want rather than something that goes through an outside server.

i would say that up to 80% of the connections are being made outside the Domain environment so it is easier to making all the connections through outside.

Thanks Hassan

You can setup both unattended and client.

With client, the client clicks and installs a file, a code is generated, you put it (the code) in on your side and a connection is made .

Unattended is ...... you know what that is :)

It's the most simplistic solution I've used and from my point of view is worth the money.

Hi Nicholas,

I have unattended access setup in all the schools I service. I use both a combination of Teamviewer and Meraki as well.

Teamviewer comes in a variety of different flavours, but is completely free. Simply install “Teamviewer Host” on the remote machine. Enter your own password and provided the computer is on - you can access it.

Cisco Meraki is a great solution as well - but very slow for screen sharing. However - Meraki will always connect solidly. It is also free to sign up, but the interface is not the easiest to navigate. Also - I believe the model is changing, but for the moment it is still free.

It’s worth noting that there is a new interface for Meraki which discourages setting up the client installer, but there is a link to use “old interface” which makes it simpler.

If you need guidance - feel free to give me a shout.

Many thanks,
Chris Reina

Thanks Chris for your advice but I would question whether Teamviewer is free.  Certainly you can install it on any number of machines but all too quickly the jowl with the scowl appears warning you of Commercial Usage.  Or am I on a different page.

Hi Nicholas,

It may be a usage issue - certainly when you terminate a session, it informs you not to use it commercially and “thanks for playing fair” messages, but during usage this doesn’t happen.

It may happen however when connected to multiple machines simultaneously. The most I’ve been connected to concurrently is 3/4 and I haven’t gotten the message during usage there.

If your requirements are multiple machines concurrently, it may be worth looking into investing in a paid for service.

A few other options include Join.me; Crossloop; Screens (Mac); ShowmyPC; Screenleap; Goto meeting.

Most use VNC as the protocol and there are a slew of controllers out there. TightVNC is a good choice as it installs as a service rather than an app. (Like Meraki)

Just a final note - as always, when opening up a machine to the outside world, ensure proper security measures are in place.

Cheers,

Chris
