Bonjour / Hi [english below] !

Since this summer, Univers Sonores Parallèles, a French organization responsible notably for the SIME, realized an idea from Daniel Judkovski by beginning a series of "Virtual Concerts" on Facebook. The point is to give streaming links to works to be listened to, by composers from all around the planet, on a Facebook event, where listeners can comment and ask questions, which can then be answered by composers.

I am responsible for the program of the next virtual concert, whose links will be made available this Sunday on the dedicated page (https://www.facebook.com/events/1970341749859704). Don't hesitate to come and discover the selected works!

En espérant vous y croiser ! Hoping to read you there!

I was very sad indeed to learn only this morning of the death of Jean-Claude Risset, on November 21st, at the age of 78.
His funeral is taking place this afternoon (November 26th) , in Marseilles.

And tributes on the GRM web pages at:

and on the IRCAM web pages:

I last saw him in Paris in January, when he gave a wonderful diffusion of Sud in a concert celebrating the music produced in the former Digital Studio (123) of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales.

A rare person and personality, valued both for his formative research contributions and for the distinctive expressiveness of his music.

One of the pioneers of electroacoustic music/computer music. A great composer, educator, researcher and a gentle, humble man who was interested in everyone else's work as well as remaining enthusiastic about his own - all his life.

It was truely a privilege and pleasure to meet him all those years ago when he came to an event in Melbourne called the International Symposium of Music Technology (ISMT) - along with John Chowning, Barry Truax, and many other leading lights, around 1979/1980.

Very saddened to hear of his passing, but his music lives on.

Here he is giving a talk in Canada in 2011 on why perception is at the centre of his work:

There are a number of his pieces on YouTube too. My favourites are Sud and Songes.

I feel very sorry for the news because Risset was someone for whom I always felt a great admiration both professional and personal. Someone who I had the privilege of meet and with whom I shared many events and interesting conversations. Someone, moreover, for whom we could not feel but affection.
Someone who delivered to electroacoustic music a fundamental flow of enrichment. His musical and scientific work will always be alive in the spirit of the composers.

Dear Elsa,
I had the privilege and honour of being invited to dinner a couple of times when I was a fellow at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France 25 years ago. I remember him exactly as you describe him, a great host, conversationalist, and creative thinker. His SUD remains one of the cornerstone works in our art.

Very sad news indeed. Besides being a good friend, Jean-Claude was recognized as a leader in computer music composition and research from what might be called the 'second generation' of computer music pioneers, that is, those who emerged in the 1960s. He was one of the very few who had professional qualifications in both music and science, which allowed him throughout his life to make significant contributions to each and see their connectedness.

I still refer to his work from the 1970s, such as Songes, to show how an expert could produce exquisite timbres within MusicV, and of course his masterwork, Sud, from the 1980s that integrates digital processing within a beautiful  environmental sound composition, but there are many more contributions over his lifetime including many publications, documented compositions and research into everything from timbral synthesis to live interaction.

As others have mentioned, he was always supportive of the work of others, and in my case, when I was experimenting with real-time granular synthesis in 1986-87, he was the first to recognize its importance and encourage me.

He was also a true gentleman - in the literal sense of the world - who seemed to enjoy life (and French wines in particular about which he was an expert!) to the fullest.

I trust his memory and legacy will live on as an inspiration to us all, as it has been for me.
