I wanted to give a status update on the mobile hacker-space project.  Nick, Myself and others have developed the working draft of Mobile hacker-space specifications.

Nick woods is working on developing a grant proposal to get funds to build the mobile hacker-space.  He's began drafting some of the sections in the proposal.  If you are interested in helping please contact Nick.

Some of the modules will need to wait until we can get a grant to pay for things like mind storms and laptops but
actually building roller carts and modules which we already have the equipment for should be easy to put together right now.

If you would like to begin work on one of the modules please let me know.

Ideally I would like to have some of the classroom modules ready for Makerfaire next year.

======================= Here are the general details of what I had I mind:=======================

The Mobile Hacker-space differs from the mobile fab-lab design in that it is modular and the hacker-space modules are unloaded and set up in a per-existing facility. The mobile fab-lab is a fixed installation of tools and machinery limiting its use to a few people at a time.  The transportation vehicle can then be used as a small work space and/or for logistical support.  The basic and intermediate setup of the mobile hacker-space both specify a trailer which requires less upkeep and has sufficient storage capacity to store the project modules for whatever event we are supporting.  The large event specification would require a large trailer and/or a large motor transport vehicle.

The event modules themselves are of great importance, where a large specialized tool installation tends to limit the use of the vehicle to industrial technology, the mobile hacker-spaces modular design allows for flexibility of what kinds of events we can support.

The class modules themselves would contain all materials and tools necessary to teach or lead a workshop on the desired content.
Here are some proposed class modules:
  • Introduction to Electronics for children
  • Electronics Soldering class
  • Computer programing
  • Robotics - Lego Mind-storms
  • Micro-controllers and Advanced robotics

The Mobile classroom environment would have items needed to set up a class room almost anywhere:

  • Basic Fabrication Lab - workshop tools
  • Mobile Computer Lab - Laptops
  • Basic Electronics Lab - electronics stations
  • Mobile Classroom- Mobile Presenter station, projector, tables, chairs ...etc

=======================

Any way, there is a lot still to do, please let me know if you would like to help out.

This sounds really exciting!  And important.  And fun.  I'd like to help with the grantwriting.  I'm pretty sure Nick & I haven't met yet, though, so what's the best way to get in touch?  I'll be at the space this evening.
