Thanks so much for contacting me, Sayde.

New Orleans Outreach works in 7 New Orleans public schools, and I just put the word out to our coordinators, in order to gauge interest.  Almost as soon as I sent the email, I received an emphatic YES!  from our coordinator at Langston Hughes Academy.  So, I know that there is at least one of our partner schools that would be thrilled to be the beneficiaries of the book drive.

Langston Hughes Academy is the Gentilly school that is the first to move into a completely new building after Katrina.  Their facility is amazing, including their library.  Having spent some time in the school, though, I can tell you that the library shelves could be more populated, as could the classroom libraries that teachers have been trying to keep to a minimum, while they have been operating out of trailers while waiting for the building to be completed.  As is the case with just about any school in New Orleans, the students at LHA have many, many needs, and LHA is doing its best to serve the individual needs of the whole child.  It's very possible that a book drive might benefit families, as the books could potentially help to fill the children's home libraries, as well.  If the committee chooses to partner with New Orleans Outreach to donate books to LHA, we can work with you to develop a specific plan to distribute the books for the greatest gain for the children.

I have a feeling that there will be other schools to chime in throughout the day, so I'll keep you posted.

We'd love to work with you on this, so please let me know if you need additional information to present to your team.  Thanks again!

Angela

Ms. Herbert,
I am a member of the Comittee for a Better New Orleans 2009 Young Leadership Forum. Every year, the group splits into two sections to perform a community service project. This year, the education group has decided to execute a book drive and I was hoping you might have some suggestions of a particular school in the New Orleans region that would truly benefit by such a donation.

We are at the beginning stages of this project and I'm really just hoping to get some input from your group to bring back to my team!

Thanks so much,

It sounds like Langston Hughes Academy is totally on board and New Orleans Outreach is willing to help with the planning. Also, it's in Orleans and they need our help. I vote for Langston Hughes. It seems particularly important that a school named after a great writer should have a good library. See you soon,

Francis

Another option would be to simply put out the call for books (with some defined parameters, certainly) and then sort them per age group. It would not be that difficult to divide the books we receive into elementary, (middle?) and high school level.

Getting books in the hands of at risk high school students would be useful as well, I think. As I’m on a college campus, I can probably gather a fair amount of books appropriate for high school students fairly easily.

I have some contacts in the publishing industry who might make some nice donations…

As far as a book drop day goes—it might be easier to have designated locations rather than designated days? And then consolidate. A designated day for sorting, maybe?

Just some thoughts.

Amy

Greetings Education team members!

I would like to nominate O. Perry Walker High School in Orleans Parish
on the West Bank, which is next to my job at Delgado Community
College- West Bank Campus. There library does not have any books and
it is supposedly a Charter School, but I do not see much progress. In
addition, I can get in touch with Delgado's get in touch with Linda
Duerson, Delgado's City Park reading Instructor who procures books
from book sales for DCC students and Ms. Shanna Clevenger who is the
Assistant Librarian at Delgado's West Bank Campus. What are your
thoughts?

Sincerely,
Pam Chappelle-Lyons, M.Ed.
