This was in Science news 13 June 2015, so it is a little old, but I thought it was interesting enough to pass on.  We might already be starting our mutual munching encounter with another galaxy.  We aren't M51, yet, but may be sooner than we thought.  Don't think I'm going to loose much sleep, though.

So... "forever" just got shorter, but there's no need to start packing our bags?  :)

I might consider a "quicky bag" with a change of shorts and a toothbrush by the door.

Greetings telescope people,  we have a potential date for one of our favorite star parties, once again.  Tuesday, 28 February 2017 is the big night and I would like to have hands of those who think they can do it that date.  It will be down at Turquoise Trail Elementary School South of the state pen and we should be able to get into the playground starting a little before sunset.  The weather is showing some signs of being more cooperative, so I know all you starlight starved types want to get in on this one.

Hello Jeffrey.   Right now, the comet is very close to us, less than 0.1 astronomical unit, but it is in Hercules so it doesn't rise until after midnight.  However, Venus, mars and the new moon are all in an equilateral triangle behind the sun on that evening.  Nice things like Orion, Taurus, Pleiades, Andromeda and some cool clusters are waiting for us.

Thanks to all,
Brad C. Jones

Tuesday should be fine – especially if I know what the astronomical impetus is for publicity.
Even if we don’t understand – putting specifics in my publicity blurb makes it more exciting for the curious and the committed
So would we be looking at / for anything in particular ?

I’ll start talking about the 28th
If your team wants a different date, I’ll just change it later
Thank you!!

Break out those scopes!  Just learned of this today.  I'm out of town for a month, but if anyone can get an eye on this, I'd love to hear about it.

Brad ------------------  Sign me up.  It's been a while since I've done an observing session with Capital City Astronomers.  And I like giving kids that first look through a telescope.  I have two telescopes (80mm refractor and 125mm Schmidt-Cassegrain) and two mounts (altaz and go-to Equatorial); do you or the teacher have a preference?  Please send along the details as we close on the 28th (or whatever date we do this).  Thanks.  Looking forward to this.

My hand says it thinks it can do that date.

Jim,  wonderful to have you back with us!  As for scope,  I suggest what you are most comfortable with as far as finding thingamabobbles, but the Schmidt-Cassegrain would have most reach, I expect.  The kids love it no matter what they can look thru.  Remember, sensitivity to having a little one playing Tarzan....accidently.  The refractor would be a little different kind of scope to explain to the kids, like a Popeye scope.

Wonder if we can shake Peter's cage and get him to fall out for this one.
I'm not sure he even reads the email, anymore.

BCJ and Jeff ---------------  Thanks for getting back to me and signing me up.  On choice of telescopes, the Schmidt has a focal length of 1250 mm, and the refractor just 500 mm.  So, yes, my trusty Celestron C5 has 2.5 times the "reach" of the refractor.  But the light and colors have more "pop" in the refractor's wider field of view.  My guess is that, BCJ, you're right, this group will be more impressed by, and find greater usefulness in, the reach of the scope.  So I'll bring the Schmidt-Cassegrain Celestron C5.  As for mount, how much time will we have for set-up?  For groups, my go-to German equatorial is preferable because it tracks objects and finds new objects automatically.  However, it takes a good hour -- after dark -- to set the mount up and align it.  Will I have that much time before we have customers lined up and ready to start looking in the eyepiece?  One other question: Should I bring my green-laser pointer?  I assume yes, but I want to give you two a chance to say no.  Thanks again, really looking forward to this.

As to the two scopes referred to in Jim Baker’s email,
I don’t know what any of that means, I say BRING IT ON!
And you decide :)
Thanks, we’re looking forward to the show.

Jim, I will have my big Cassegrain with me and I'm not sure what anyone else will have.  So far it is John Bao, you and me with scopes and Jeff is the teacher at TT where we will be.  I am hoping for two or three others, by then.  I always carry my pointer because some people want to know what object they are seeing.  I usually point to the approximate spot they are looking, or let them look thru one of the finders.  I usually arrive just before sunset and that gives me a half hour plus, to set up.  By dark o'clock, the kids, parents and maybe some teacher will be hanging around and asking to see xxx or wanting to look at whatever you are using to do your alignment.  It was awful when I was using my old 10" Newtonian on GEM mount as it took forever to get aligned.  Since I don't expect Peter to show, I will probably be mumbling around trying to get the spectators aroused.
If you want to show some of the larger objects, like planets, the Pleiades, Andromeda, or something like that, then the wider field with quick setup might be better.  Like I said, what you are more comfortable with.

Brad and Jeff ---------------  Since Jeff says I can come as early as I want, I'll bring the go-to mount.  The altitude-azimuth requires me to move the object back to the middle of the field of view before each and every observer goes to the eyepiece -- a lot of wasted time from the perspective of our customers.  I'll bring my green-laser pointer.  Now if we can get a clear night...  Thanks, gentlemen.
