This is a really cool opportunity!  What a great conversation two you could record about your year of service.  I did something like this with my high school ~ they recently asked alums to come back and talk one-on-one with current students.  I thought it would be awkward, but it was great.  We talked so much that we ran out of time; the other pairs had the same experience.  Consider it, check it out, and let me now if you're going to do it!

I'm sending this to all former Cap Corps volunteers in the DC area, may be in the DC area, or can easily get to the DC area. Pass it on!

Peace,
Margaret

Hi Everybody,

I know that you just heard from us yesterday, but we really wanted to pass this opportunity along to you and only just found out about it today. If you are in DC or have alums in the DC area, please pass this along to them as the deadline for application is Thursday. Just think about how great it would it be to have CVN AmeriCorps stories archived in the Library of Congress!

Thanks for your help in getting the word out!

In peace,

Caitlin

5 Openings for AmeriCorps Conversations to be Recorded by StoryCorps - submit requests by Thursday, August 30th

We are looking for members of the AmeriCorps community to share their oral stories through StoryCorps.

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit whose mission is to provide people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives. Since 2003, tens of thousands of everyday people have shared stories and life experiences in a StoryCorps recording session. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to share, and is preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, and millions listen to our weekly broadcasts on NPR’s Morning Edition and at storycorps.org. Listen to interviews and learn more here: www.storycorps.org/listen and in Spanish: www.storycorps.org/historias.

The StoryCorps MobileBooth is coming to the DC area and the Corporation for National and Community Service has 5 slots! Please find instructions below to submit a request to participate.

About the Visit:
·  Location: Columbia Pike Library/Career Center, 816 South Walter Reed Drive,    Arlington, VA
·  Recording Dates: September 24 - October 20, 2012
·  Cost to Participate: This is a public service and there is no cost to participate. There will be free parking available to participants.

Additional Information:
· Please note these are not interviews, but conversations between two people who know each other. For example, the conversation could be between an AmeriCorps member/alum and an individual that has benefited from the services offered by the nonprofit where the member serves/served; a member/alum and Supervisor; member/alum with family (spouses that met through service, different generations that served).

·This is a time to sit, share, and listen to one another. It should be a relaxed, casual conversation.

AmeriCorps will provide you with a list of suggested questions to prompt the conversation.

You will receive a complimentary CD copy of the recording immediately after the interview.

Prior to the recording day, there will be 2-week and 3-day reminder calls to answer any questions participants may have.

How to Sign Up:

·  Email Elizabeth Matthews at emat...@cns.gov with subject line, “Submission for StoryCorps”

· Include name, relationship to VISTA, who you would like to interview and why – please make a compelling case – we only have 5 slots!

· You will be notified by Tuesday, September 4th if you have been selected. At that point, you will be assigned an interview date/time.

· Deadline to Apply for Conversation Slot: Thursday, August 30, 2012

Record Your Story

A StoryCorps interview is 40 minutes of uninterrupted time for meaningful conversation, in any language, with a friend or loved one. When you arrive at your session with your interview partner, a trained StoryCorps Facilitator will meet you to explain the process, make you feel comfortable in our recording space, and sit with you during the interview session. If you come alone, the Facilitator will conduct the interview.

There are 6 basic steps:
1. Welcome (2 minutes): The Facilitator will provide some background information about StoryCorps, explain his or her role in the interview process, and answer any questions.

2. Prep (8 minutes): The Facilitator will walk you through the paperwork, which asks for basic personal information such as name, address, and ethnic background.

3. Soundcheck (5 minutes): Once you and your interview partner are ready to proceed, the Facilitator will make sure you are positioned well for recording and check the audio levels.

4. Interview (40 minutes): Use our Great Questions list to start the conversation, but remember they are just suggestions. Trust your instincts. If something moves you, ask more questions.

Sometimes your storyteller will need “permission” to explore a certain topic; you can simply say “Tell me more.” Feel free to ask questions in whatever order feels right, and don’t let them constrain the conversation. Real moments are the best moments.

Some tips for helping the conversation flow:
• Look at your storyteller’s eyes, not the microphone. Stay interested and engaged.
• Be yourself. You can laugh or even cry with your storyteller.
• Asking emotional questions like, “How does this make you feel?” often elicit thoughtful responses. Don’t be afraid to ask.
• Be curious, honest, and keep an open heart. Great things will happen.
While you and your partner are talking, the Facilitator will take notes, keep time, and monitor audio. Facilitators are not interviewers, though they may ask a question during the recording.

5. CD (4 minutes): When the interview is over, the Facilitator will give you a copy of the interview on CD and explain the release form, which allows StoryCorps to keep one copy and send another to Library of Congress archive.

6. Photos (6 minutes): Finally, the Facilitator will take photos of you and your interview partner, both together and separately, to be included in the Library of Congress archive.
