Canvas LMS generating several small files on S3

Hi,
I've just installed the latest version of Canvas LMS and I've setup S3 for file storage. I've noticed that several small files (around 1KB) are generated in the root directory of the bucket. The filenames are subdomain.2017-06-06-00-27-25-4935F4286DDF8583. I've attached a screen shot of the bucket.
What's generating these files and why are they being generated? Can I stop it from generating more? Is it safe to delete the files on S3?
