Getting Character Codes and Substrings?

Is there an easy way to do this, or should I jump around the C++ API and inject ways to do this?

It's possible only from C++ API so far.

See my String module in candor.io where I implement readUInt8 and friends in C++.  Feel free to add other functions to this module like substr.
