A last, desperate pivot: Trump and his allies go full racist on coronavirus
March 20, 2020, Amanda Marcotte, Raw Story
https://www.rawstory.com/2020/03/a-last-desperate-pivot-trump-and-his-allies-go-full-racist-on-coronavirus/

Trump is always eager to find an angle to unspool some demagoguery
about how nonwhite people are the enemy, so it was genuinely surprising
that he focused, at first, on minimizing the problem. It didn't suggest
the man has any actual decency, of course, but it was entirely expected
he would default to racism, even when trying to manipulate the stock
markets.

But those days are over. The virus is spreading rapidly, people are
going stir-crazy stuck at home and the economy is tanking. This is the
kind of crisis that opportunistic racists barely dared dream of before.
Indeed, Fox News host Tucker Carlson has been all but pleading for
weeks for Trump and his fellow right-wing talking heads to move away
from denialism and towards racist exploitation.

Trump is finally listening. He's started call this epidemic the
"Chinese virus" and, like all racist trolls, is playing dumb when
called out for it. He's said it's "not racist at all, no, not at all"
and that he wants "to be accurate" and that the virus "comes from China.
"

Trump's racist trolling is sending Carlson into bouts of near-orgasmic
ecstasy. On Tuesday, he swooned that the president's "Chinese virus"
rhetoric was an example of "Trump at his very best."

Disinformation and scapegoating: how America's far right is responding to
coronavirus
March 20, 2020, Jason Wilson, The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/19/america-far-right-coronavirus-outbreak-trump-alex-jones

The far right in America has received the coronavirus pandemic in much
the same manner as any other event: with disinformation, conspiracies
and scapegoating. Many seem to see it as a significant opportunity,
whether it is for financial gain, recruiting new followers, or both.

The delayed and much criticized response to coronavirus by the Trump
administration has helped them, leaving many Americans confused, bereft
of information and looking for answers. A situation in which people are
panic-buying supplies is ideal for a movement powered by fear and lies.

Apocalyptic narratives ? whether of societal collapse, biblical
rapture, or race war ? are the central way that the a spectrum of
far-right movements draw in followers and resources. These narratives
use fear to draw followers closer, allowing leaders to direct their
followers' actions, and maybe fleece them blind.

Former PM Stephen Harper joins Alberta's new 12-member economic recovery
council
March 20, 2020, Chris Varcoe, National Post
https://nationalpost.com/business/varcoe-former-pm-stephen-harper-on-albertas-new-economic-recovery-council/wcm/e29b4bc3-1098-46d5-b95f-25a8cd6125c0

The province has unveiled a new advisory council on economic recovery
for Alberta, a high-powered group that includes former prime minister
Stephen Harper.

The 12-member panel, led by economist Jack Mintz, will be advising
Premier Jason Kenney on issues surrounding the province's economic
recovery as it grapples with a severe downturn caused by the COVID-19
outbreak and slumping energy prices.

Aside from the former prime minister, the group will also include
business leaders such as WestJet co-founder Clive Beddoe, ATCO chief
executive Nancy Southern and Mac Van Wielingen, founder of ARC Financial.

Game Over for Kenney
March 20, 2020, Michael Harris, The Tyee
https://thetyee.ca/Analysis/2020/03/20/Game-Over-For-Kenney/

One of the many stories that the pandemic has eclipsed is Jason Kenney.
Alberta's premier is suddenly at risk of going from being one of
Canada's most successful populist politicians into its most outdated
leader.

Say Hello to Our New Health Reporter: Moira Wyton

Before COVID-19 turned Times Square into a ghost town, shut down the
NHL, and closed Parliament, the New York Stock Exchange, and the Taj
Mahal, Kenney was making news directing elbows into Justin Trudeau's
grizzled beard - elbows sharpened by years of political skirmishing. He
kept bugging Trudeau to concentrate on the economy. Alberta's primarily.

It was the familiar harangue: Ottawa was failing the West and the
energy sector, and it had to stop or else. Trudeau had other fish to
fry, including extravagant promises on fighting climate change -
promises he largely broke during his first term, and for which he was
punished by voters in 2019.

Hannity claims he's "never called the virus a hoax" 9 days after decrying
Democrats' "new hoax"
March 20, 2020, Aaron Rupar, Vox
https://www.vox.com/2020/3/20/21186727/hannity-coronavirus-coverage-fox-news

Sean Hannity's coronavirus coverage underwent a remarkable
transformation in just a week. And it's not just him - the shift is
emblematic of a broader trend at Fox News.

At first, Hannity took an antagonistic approach to coronavirus
coverage, even using the word "hoax" as recently as 10 days ago. "This
scaring the living hell out of people - I see it, again, as like, let's
bludgeon Trump with this new hoax," Hannity said during his March 9
broadcast, during a segment in which he downplayed the risk of
coronavirus to everyone except for people with compromised immune
systems and older individuals.

He even cited "coronavirus hysteria" just two days after alleging a
"hoax."

Loeffler among senators whose stock trading during coronavirus raises
questions
March 20, 2020, Tia Mitchell, Atlanta Journal-Constitution
https://www.ajc.com/news/state--regional-govt--politics/perdue-loeffler-among-senators-whose-stock-trading-during-coronavirus-raises-questions/YjEYsWqAVwZh52HTpl1EpL/

U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler had been on the job less than three weeks when
she attended a private, senators-only briefing on the spread of COVID-19.

In the days and weeks after, financial disclosures show that either she
or her spouse sold up to $3.1 million in stocks. They made just two
purchase, both in companies whose software technology is now in demand
as Americans are forced to work from home to stem the rise of the
coronavirus.

These transactions have raised questions about whether Loeffler dumped
stocks based on inside information she learned during the Jan. 24
briefing or others she was privy to as a senator. And the scrutiny of
her financial deals have led both Democrats and Republicans to ask for
her to resign or be investigated. One watchdog group has already filed
an ethics complaint.

Mar-a-Lago closes, other Trump properties cut staff: report
March 20, 2020, J. Edward Moreno, The Hill
https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/488701-mar-a-lago-closes-other-trump-properties-cut-staff-report

President Trump's family business has laid off staff at its resorts
after they experienced decreased clientele as a result of the
coronavirus outbreak, The New York Times reported Friday.

The Trump Organization reportedly cut staff from hotels and resorts in
New York and Washington, D.C., halted new reservations at a property on
the Las Vegas Strip and closed golf courses in Los Angeles and South
Florida.

Trump's Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago, reportedly closed as well.

Sen. Kelly Loeffler Dumped Millions in Stock After Coronavirus Briefing
March 20, 2020, Lachlan Markay, Daily Beast
https://www.thedailybeast.com/sen-kelly-loeffler-dumped-millions-in-stock-after-coronavirus-briefing

The Senate's newest member sold off seven figures' worth of stock
holdings in the days and weeks after a private, all-senators meeting on
the novel coronavirus that subsequently hammered U.S. equities.

Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) reported the first sale of stock jointly
owned by her and her husband on Jan. 24, the very day that her
committee, the Senate Health Committee, hosted a private, all-senators
briefing from administration officials, including the CDC director and
Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and
Infectious Diseases, on the coronavirus.

"Appreciate today's briefing from the President's top health officials
on the novel coronavirus outbreak," she tweeted about the briefing at
the time.

Tucker Carlson: Burr Must Explain or Resign Over Stock Dump
March 20, 2020, Justin Baragona, Daily Beast
https://www.thedailybeast.com/tucker-carlson-says-richard-burr-should-resign-and-be-prosecuted-if-he-cant-explain-stock-dump

Fox News host Tucker Carlson ended his program Thursday night by
calling for Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) to resign and face prosecution for
insider trading if he can't provide "an honest explanation" for dumping
over $1 million of stock after he discovered the severity of the
looming coronavirus pandemic.

Shortly before Carlson went to air Thursday night, ProPublica reported
that after the Senate Intelligence Committee that Burr chairs began
receiving daily briefings, he went on a Feb. 13 selling spree in which
he sold up to $1.6 million of holdings. A week after he offloaded his
stocks, which included shares in hotels and resorts, the market
plummeted on coronavirus fears, and has since dropped more than 30
percent.

"He had inside information about what could happen to our country,
which is now happening, but he didn't warn the public," the
conservative Fox News host said in response to the report. "He didn't
give a primetime address. He didn't go on television to sound the alarm.

Devin Nunes surpassed on Twitter by a cow parody account he sued
March 20, 2019, Christal Hayes, USA Today
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2019/03/20/devin-nunes-surpassed-twitter-cow-parody-account-he-sued/3227284002/

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., filed a $250 million lawsuit earlier this
week against Twitter and a number of parody accounts that poked fun at
the congressman, a fierce defender of President Donald Trump.

The lawsuit named several of the spoof accounts and well, yeah, things
turned out just about the way one would think. Twitter users started
immediately following the accounts listed in the lawsuit, notably one
account dedicated to Nunes' cow.

Two days after the lawsuit was filed Monday, @DevinCow, which had less
than 2,000 followers, now boasts a following of nearly half a million
on Twitter. The massive follower count, which stood at 454,000 as of
Wednesday afternoon, even surpassed Nunes' account and its 395,000
followers.

Doug Ford calls Essex MPP a 'coward' in response to questions about ousted MPP
March 20, 2019, CBC News
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/doug-ford-pc-ndp-essex-tara-natyshak-1.5063644

Essex MPP Taras Natyshak questioned the premier a second time in Queens
Park Tuesday about former MPP Randy Hillier's departure from the PC
caucus.

Hillier, who represented the eastern Ontario riding of
Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston, was expelled last week, claimed he was
kicked out "for raising concerns of possible illegal and unregistered
lobbying by close friends and advisors employed by Premier Ford."

Natyshak asked whether or not that claim is true.

Doug Ford didn't breach rules in Taverner appointment, integrity commissioner
says
March 20, 2019, CBC News
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/doug-ford-ontario-integrity-commissioner-ron-taverner-1.5064451

Ontario's integrity commissioner says Premier Doug Ford did not breach
conflict of interest rules during the appointment of his friend Ron
Taverner as Ontario Provincial Police commissioner.

"I found that the Premier stayed at arm's length from the recruitment
process and that he believed it to be independent," J. David Wake said
in the report released on Wednesday.

But the report on the Taverner's selection does not fully exonerate the
government. Wake said the appointment process itself was flawed and
said there were "some troubling aspects of the recruitment process" -
most notably communication between the then-secretary of the cabinet
Steve Orsini and Dean French, Ford's chief of staff.

Is New Zealand the tipping point in the fight against far-right terrorism?
March 20, 2019, Nora Loreto, Opinion, National Observer
https://www.nationalobserver.com/2019/03/20/opinion/new-zealand-tipping-point-fight-against-far-right-terrorism

In July 2011, the phrase "Cultural Marxism" broke into the mainstream
thanks to a long and rambling manifesto. It was published after the
author, a Norwegian far-right terrorist, killed 77 people in Utoya,
Norway, the majority of whom were youth attending a left-wing political
summer camp.

Anders Breivik saw these youth as a threat to the White Europe that he
wished for. Cultural Marxism, he explained in detail, was a political
theory pushed by Jews and feminists to destroy Western Civilization.

It was code for the racist, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, violently
sexist worldview that drove Breivik to commit such a mass horror.

LONDON - Conservative strategist Stephen K. Bannon oversaw Cambridge
Analytica's early efforts to collect troves of Facebook data as part of
an ambitious program to build detailed profiles of millions of American
voters, a former employee of the data-science firm said Tuesday.

The 2014 effort was part of a high-tech form of voter persuasion touted
by the company, which under Bannon identified and tested the power of
anti-establishment messages that later would emerge as central themes
in President Trump's campaign speeches, according to Chris Wylie, who
left the company at the end of that year.

Among the messages tested were "drain the swamp" and "deep state," he
said.

Ontario university won't stop talk by anti-immigration speaker Faith Goldy

Some students, faculty and groups at Wilfrid Laurier University in
Waterloo, Ont., are speaking out against a planned talk Tuesday evening
by Faith Goldy - a woman described as alt-right and a white supremacist
sympathizer.

Goldy is giving a talk on keeping Canada's borders closed to
immigration as part of a speaker series being put on by a new campus
group, Laurier Society for Open Inquiry.

Her talk is entitled, "Ethnocide: Multiculturalism and European

San Franciscans Hate These New Anti-Immigrant Ads
March 20, 2018, Ashwin Rodrigues, Vice News
https://www.vice.com/en_ca/article/gymp8x/san-franciscans-hate-these-new-anti-immigrant-ads

On Saturday morning, I asked Jeremy, a daily BART rider, what he
thought of the anti-immigration ads all over San Francisco's Civic
Center station, where we were standing. What anti-immigration ads? He
hadn't noticed them, even the one in front of us. During our
conversation, another man did notice the ad and, without breaking
stride, spat on it.

First reported by BuzzFeed News, the anti-immigration advertisements
paid for by Progressives for Immigration Reform (PFIR), a DC-based
group, have cropped up on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) stations
and trains. The advertisements target US tech workers directly and
claim that tech companies think domestic are "expensive, undeserving,
and expendable." They also call on Congress to "fix" the H-1B visa
program, which allows US employers, including tech companies, to hire
skilled foreign workers.

Though the ads have sparked multiple news stories and angry tweets, my
conversations with BART riders show many people aren't noticing the ads.
When they did notice, the response was often disgust or indifference.

Donald Trump 'kept book of Adolf Hitler's speeches in his bedside cabinet and
may have read it for inspiration'
March 20, 2017, Benjamin Kentish, The Independent

A 1990 Vanity Fair article about billionaire businessman stated that Mr
Trump's then wife Ivana, said her husband owned a copy of "My New
Order" ? a printed collection of the Nazi leader's speeches.

Marie Brenner, the article's author, wrote: "Ivana Trump told her
lawyer Michael Kennedy that from time to time her husband reads a book
of Hitler's collected speeches, 'My New Order', which he keeps in a
cabinet by his bed.

"Kennedy now guards a copy of My New Order in a closet at his office,
as if it were a grenade. Hitler's speeches, from his earliest days up
through the Phony War of 1939, reveal his extraordinary ability as a
master propagandist."
