We take pride in being Canadians.
Here is why:

Great Answers

In France , at a fairly large conference, Prime Minister
Stephen Harper was asked by a French cabinet minister if
Canadian involvement in Afghanistan was just an example of
"empire building".
Mr. Harper answered by saying, 'Over the years, Canada has
sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril
to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount
of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury
those that did not return.'
You could have heard a pin drop.

A Canadian admiral was attending a naval conference that
included admirals from the Canadian, U.S. , English,
Australian and French navies.
At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a
large group of officers that included personnel from most
of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English
as they sipped their drinks, but a French admiral suddenly
complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages,
North Americans generally learn only English. He then
asked, "Why is it that we always have to speak English in
these conferences rather than speaking French?"
Without hesitating, the Canadian admiral replied
"Maybe it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and
Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak
German."
You could have heard a pin drop.

When Robert Whiting, an elderly Canadian gentleman of 83,
arrived in Paris by plane, he took a few minutes to locate
his passport in his carry-on at French Customs.
"You have been to France before, monsieur?" the Customs
officer asked sarcastically..
Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.
The official replied, "Then you should know enough to have
your passport ready."
The Canadian said, "The last time I was here, I didn't have
to show it."
"Impossible, Monseur. Canadians always have to show
passports on arrival in France !"
The Canadian senior gave the Frenchman a long, hard look.
Then he quietly explained, "Well, when I came ashore on
D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't
find a single Frenchman to show a passport to."
You could have heard a pin drop.

Canadians are cool.

Then why are we bringing them back from Afghanistan? Surely the
grateful Afghan people will care for them just as our grateful Dutch
friends do............or is it possible we just aren't the great
liberators in Afghanistan that we claim to be?

I think that you might be happier living with the Taliban than here in
Canada.

It was a good post. Since we are on to Canadian jokes, here is one.

A Canadian goes to Florida for a winter vacation. Has a ball. But
frost was about to hit and the local oranges would freeze. So he quiped
to the orchard owner, why not get a bunch of monkeys to do it?

After the Canadian left, and the orchard was picked clean, a neighbor
came over to ask where he got all the labour? He said, I met a Canadian
that said to use monkeys, a brilliant idea. They are so smart they have
frogs cutting lumber for them.

Thanks for sharing these terrific stories with us John. What a pleasure
compared to the crap we are usually subjected to here.

If anybody living here is not proud to be Canadian, from the day they
receive their PR, they should go back where they came here from - or just
leave in the cases of some of the posters here who sound like they would
like to live anywhere else but here.

Why aren't you over there saving the Afghan women, Guppy?

Don't give the excuse that you are too old. You are NEVER too old to
die for the corporate agenda.

Great quotes, but unfortunately, they weren't said by Canadians. As a
Canadian military historian, I'd like to point out that at least two
these poignant quotes were all given by Americans.

The first is a paraphrase of a quote give by (Ret.) General Colin
Powell during a speech in Switzerland in 2003. The link where you can
find more about it is given here: http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl-colin-powell.htm
- Regardless, though, it is a brilliant speech.

The second is a bit fuzzy, as it has been attributed to both an
American as well as a Canadian, but no specific name has been given in
any of the sources I've searched. This one is possibly a derived
quote, like the one by Colin Powell given as example above - and quite
possibly by someone who was neither Canadian nor American. It's
uncertain at this time if this person was even a naval officer.
Personally, I'd chalk that one up as an Internet hoax.

And in the last one, Robert Whiting was indeed a D-Day veteran, except
he did not land at Juno Beach (the only Canadian beach on D-Day). By
most accounts, he was at Omaha or Utah Beach - however, I would also
likely tag this one as an internet hoax or a derived quote like Mr.
Powell's.

We Canadians have a rich and storied military tradition and there is
much we have to be proud for. "In Flanders Fields" was written by a
Canadian. The UN Peacekeeping initiative was founded (and staffed) by
Canadians when it was first created. Vimy Ridge in France is Canadian
soil - where else in France can you find foreign-owned territory,
outside of consular or embassy buildings?

At any rate, all of the quotes listed here are impressive, even if
they might be derived or even fictional. Personally, I hope that
someone somewhere said these. Even if they weren't Canadian. :)

Agreed. While english Canada produced pretty good for it's population
size, when the USA jumped in with industrialization and quantity of
soldiers, the difference was truly realized.

I liked him, if we had to have a black man president because he was
black, I would have liked Colin Powell. Doubtful lib-dim-statism would
jerk him around for long.

But well said.

A hoax perhaps, but the spirit in it is quite good.

Didn't know that about Vimy Ridge.

Yep. Even though I have read them before, they are timeless and priceless.

We are doomed to repeat when we forget.

Why would we do that, when they're as much a part of Canadian military
tradition as the rest of Canada?

The Royal 22e Régiment has a long, celebrated and respected combat
history, and you do them a great disservice in comparing them to the
likes of the Al Qaeda and Taliban.
