A Good, but not Perfect Knife

If you want a big folding knife at an affordable price, Cold Steel is your manufacturer. But, I feel like there are a few things they could have done a bit differently to make this an even better knife. First off, this is most certainly designed as a personal defense knife. So, I will not be reviewing how well it performs in an EDC or utility knife role. Cold Steel makes other knives that fit that category far better, the Voyager series comes to mind.
Lets start with the good. The knife comes very sharp. It will slice through phone book paper without tearing it. The handle is made of very grippy and very strong G-10 resulting in a very strong and light knife. The knife is well balanced, the center of gravity is right between your pointer and middle finger when holding it in a forward grip. This makes a rather heavy knife feel and behave much lighter than it is. The ergonomics are great whether you are holding in a forward, rear or reverse grip. The thumb plate is easy to work with your thumb and works perfectly as a wave/Emerson opener when you catch it on you pocket.
Now, the not so good. The texture of the G-10 under the pocket clip is way to grippy. It makes it very hard to put the knife in your pocket or take it out fast to use the wave opener. The texture is great on the rest of the knife, very grippy, but that works against it here. A small patch of untextured or smooth G-10 under the pocket clip would solve this. I will probably do this with some sand paper. I'm also not the biggest fan of the serrations. It have found through cutting tests on clothed meat that the smaller serrations tend to snag and tear rather than cut. I much prefer larger serrations that will cut smoothly. Don't get me wrong though, it will still mess you up if you get slashed by this. I just think wider serrations would be better.
On a legal note, this knife can be considered a "spring blade knife" in some states. In some states a "spring blade knife" is any knife that can deploy the blade without the user toughing it. I'm simplifying a bit, but basically if a blade can be deployed without force being directly applied to the blade, some states consider that to be an illegal "spring blade knife." The word there is CAN, not 'designed to.' And, this knife can be deployed in that way. If you hold the closed knife by the handle and give it a sharp downward than upward motion the blade will deploy and lock. I like this feature, but the law might not.

Go Big Or Go Home!!!!

Big sharp and beautiful. What else can you say. Cold Steel is one of the only companies to make big quality folders an I like what they, re doing. This may be too much for some to carry on a daily basis but one can, t help but feeling more secure knowing you have the capability of putting almost a half a foot of steel into an attacker. If you can, t carry a firearm I highly recommend this beast.
