Título: Simply Connect: A New Model of Local Transport; A New Challenge for Developers

Descrição: Simply Connect, an exciting young British company, is at the heart of the emerging ‘Mobility as a Service’ (MaaS). Our approach to transport is to use many small vehicles, each with 6-12 seats, to meet the demands of many different passengers by scheduling and routing each vehicle in real time. In this way, we can combine journeys to meet each passenger’s specific journey requirements (origin, destination and arrival time) whilst making the most efficient possible use of the vehicles. Of course, this relies on significant back-end and user-facing software to take passengers’ real-time bookings and optimise vehicle use in satisfying all passengers’ journeys. Simply Connect is developing this software and will in future release it under an open source license, as part of a company ethos that promotes transport being operated by local community-focussed companies under Simply Connect’s umbrella framework. Simply Connect is close to launch in one initial location, with several further locations lined up to follow shortly afterwards.

Galen Brown, who is Director of Technology at Simply Connect and is currently based in São José dos Campos, will talk about how Simply Connect is addressing the technological challenges of this new form of transport, as well as where there might be scope for entrepreneurial developers to get

involved in shaping the software behind this transport movement.

Mini-bio: Galen is a Director of Simply Connect and the Lead Technologist, having played a variety of key roles within the company since its very early days. Galen is passionate about developing software to help solve real-world problems. He studied at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where he initially worked in Sustainable Development, before turning his focus to software engineering in order to help apply software to sustainability issues – a theme that has been seen consistently in Galen’s career ever since he was a winner of the EU Contest for Young Scientists in 2007 for programming and design work on an energy saving device. Within his multiple roles at Simply Connect, Galen has overseen all software development to date and has been the technical representative of Simply Connect at multiple meetings with UK authorities, universities and the British Government.
