Here's the situation: I don't have a gpu on my computer, there are GPUs on the remote server. Can I use virtual environment to run the experiments? Where do I need to install Caffe, on my computer or remote server? Is this possible?

I do recommend to use one of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) services, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud.

If you're not familiar with AWS, this guide will help you set up an AWS EC2 instance.

The easiest solution would be to have everything installed on the remote server and use your computer only as a terminal. You can access the remote server using ssh (on Unix systems)
